Chapter 7 - The Sister’s Downfall — "The 2:00 AM Termination Email from the Secret Board!"

By 2:00 AM on Christmas morning, the festive lights of the Carter family home were still glowing, but the warmth inside had completely vanished.
I sat in the back of my quiet, comfortable sedan, watching the rain turn to sleet against the windowpane as we pulled away from the cul-de-sac. My laptop was open on my knees, the screen displaying the live administrative activity log for Vance & Associates.
Every single board member had been notified of the merger's termination. The digital emergency meeting had lasted exactly twelve minutes.
The Disciplinary Action LogCase File: VC-2026-991
Subject: Vivien Carter, Executive Appointee
Charges: Corporate Fraud, Unauthorized Use of Trustee Credentials, Unhedged Asset Leverage
Disciplinary Action: TERMINATION FOR CAUSE — EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY
The formal email notification was sent to Vivien's personal address at 1:15 AM. By 1:30 AM, her corporate login credentials had been revoked, her access to the Buckhead luxury office was disabled, and her company-issued credit cards were flagged as "inactive."
I looked out the window as we passed the downtown bookstore—my bookstore. It sat quietly in the dark, its brick facade solid and secure, a place of peace in a world built on vanity and greed.
For twenty-four years, my family had told me that I was a failure because I didn't want their corner offices, their gold-trimmed dinner plates, or their country-club applause. They had believed that my silence was a sign of weakness, that my discipline was a lack of ambition, and that they could treat me like an emergency fund with a heartbeat whenever their lies began to catch up with them.
But they had forgotten the most basic law of the market.
