Chapter 2 - SHADOWS AT THE PERIMETER

Over the next three weeks, the tone inside the Romano mansion shifted dramatically. The cold, sterile mausoleum that had housed my grief for five long years was suddenly filled with color.
Lily didn't care about my reputation. She didn't care that the men standing in the corners of the courtyard carried submachine guns beneath their jackets. To her, Viktor was "Uncle Grumpy," my lead strategist was "The Book Man," and I was simply "Mister Big House."
Elena, however, remained terrified—not of me, but of the life I led.
"Mr. Romano, this is too much," Elena said one evening as she folded linens in the grand sitting room. I had ordered the staff to stop treating her as a servant, but old habits died hard. "The clothes you bought Lily, the private security... we are simple people. We don't belong in a fortress."
"You were a target the moment Luchesi saw Lily’s paint on my face, Elena," I said, pouring two glasses of sparkling water and handing one to her. She hesitated before taking it. "My enemies don't have honor. They will see Lily as my heart, and they will try to pierce it."
Elena’s brown eyes filled with tears. "She’s all I have, Adrian. Her father... he left before she was born. He didn't want us."
"Then he was a fool," I replied without hesitation. "And you are under my protection now. Neither of you will ever want for anything again."
Just as the words left my mouth, the mansion’s silent alarm flared red. The lights in the sitting room dimmed automatically, replaced by the amber glow of the emergency backup generators.
Viktor burst into the room, his weapon drawn. "Boss! We’ve got a breach at the North Gate. A convoy of unmarked SUVs just rammed the security barrier!"
Elena gasped, pulling Lily close to her chest. Lily, still half-asleep, buried her face in her mother's shoulder, clutching her worn stuffed rabbit, Buttons.
"Get them to the safe room underneath the wine cellar. Now!" I ordered, pulling a custom Kimber .45 from my desk drawer.
"Adrian, no!" Elena cried out, reaching for my arm. Her fingers brushed against my wrist, a touch so warm and genuine it froze me for a fraction of a second. "Don't go out there."
"This is my house, Elena," I said, my voice icy calm. "Nobody enters without my permission."
I sprinted down the western corridor toward the main foyer, flanked by six of my best tactical operatives. Gunfire was already echoing through the courtyard—heavy automatic rounds splintering the reinforced oak entrance doors.
The glass ceiling shattered in a rain of crystal shards as three masked mercenaries rappelled down from the roof.
I didn't hesitate. I raised my weapon and fired three controlled bursts, dropping the first two intruders before they hit the marble floor. My men engaged the third, tactical crossfire filling the hallway with the smell of ozone and gunpowder.
This was no ordinary gang raid. These men moved with military precision. They wore tactical body armor bearing no insignias, and their weapons were equipped with high-grade suppressors.
I stepped over the fallen operative, using my boot to roll him onto his back. I ripped off his balaclava.
He was young, with a severe scar across his throat—a signature mark of the Vanguard, an elite private military company operating out of Eastern Europe. They didn't take contracts from small-time street gangs. They were hired by billionaires... or rival syndicates with deep pockets.
"Boss," Viktor called out, breathless, coming down the stairs. "The North Gate is secured. We wiped out the secondary breach team. But look at this."
He handed me a encrypted satellite phone recovered from one of the dead mercs. The screen was still active, displaying an unread text message sent just three minutes prior:
"Target secured? Bring the child to the docks. The buyer is waiting."
My blood turned to liquid nitrogen.
They weren't here to assassinate me. They were here for Lily.
"Check the perimeter feeds!" I roared, sprinting back toward the east wing. "Where is Elena?!"
"She went to the safe room with Marco!" Viktor yelled, chasing after me.
When we reached the entrance of the wine cellar, the heavy steel door was hanging wide open. Marco, one of my most trusted guards, was lying on the floor in a pool of blood, a single shot to his chest.

Inside the safe room, the room was empty.
A single item lay in the center of the concrete floor: Lily’s battered stuffed rabbit, soaked in red paint.
