Chapter 3 - THE RAT IN THE PALACE

"How?" I screamed, my voice echoing off the concrete walls of the basement. I kicked a wooden crate, shattering it against the far wall. "How did they know the location of the secondary safe room? Only five people in this entire organization knew about this bunker!"

Viktor stood pale, his gun lowered, his eyes fixed on Marco’s body. "Adrian... Marco didn't draw his weapon. Look at him. He was shot at point-blank range by someone he was looking right at."

A cold realization settled over me. It wasn't just an outside attack. It was a betrayal from within my inner circle.

For five years, I had built a empire based on iron-clad loyalty. I paid my men better than any boss in the country. I took care of their families. And yet, someone had taken a check to sell out a three-year-old child.

"Seal the estate," I commanded, my voice dropping into a deadly whisper that was far more dangerous than my shouting. "Nobody leaves. No security guards, no kitchen staff, no bodyguards. Shut off all cellular towers within a two-mile radius."

Within ten minutes, eighty armed men were gathered in the main courtyard under the pouring Chicago rain. I stood on the grand marble balcony overlooking them, rain dripping from my coat, my hand resting on the hilt of the blade tucked into my belt.

"One of you sold out my household tonight," I spoke, my voice amplified by the estate’s PA system. "One of you took money from the Vanguard to breach my gates and hand a child to an executioner."

The men looked at each other, murmurs of suspicion cascading through the ranks.

"I am giving the traitor sixty seconds to step forward," I continued, pulled a timer from my pocket. "If you step forward, I will kill you quickly. If I have to find you myself... I will make sure your family forgets what you looked like."

The seconds ticked down in agony.

50... 40... 30...

Silence filled the courtyard, save for the heavy drum of rain on iron gates.

When the timer hit zero, I turned to Viktor. "Run the biometric logs for the safe room keypad over the last two hours."

Viktor pulled up his tactical tablet, his fingers flying across the screen. Suddenly, his hands stopped. He looked up at me, his eyes filled with genuine horror.

"What is it?" I asked.

"Adrian... the code to open the safe room from the outside was entered using your master override key," Viktor said quietly. "The key that only exists on two devices. Yours... and the master vault tablet in your private study."

I turned instantly and marched back into the mansion, up the spiral staircase, and pushed open the doors to my study.

The glass case where the master vault tablet was kept was shattered. Sitting on my desk was a small silver flash drive and a handwritten note written in precise, elegant calligraphy:

"You thought you could replace what you lost, Adrian? You thought a housekeeper and a bastard child could heal the blood on your hands? Meet me at Warehouse 14 on the South Docks. Come alone, or the little artist loses her hands."

I recognized the handwriting immediately. It belonged to a man I had believed dead for three years.

Julian Vance—my former Underboss, and the brother of my late wife.
