Chapter 6 - AFTERMATH AND ANSWERS

The ride back to the Romano estate was silent. The rain had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, cool Chicago night dominated by a full moon.

Elena sat in the back of the armored suburban, holding a fast-asleep Lily in her lap. My medical team had already treated Elena’s bruised wrists and given her a clean bill of health, but the trauma in her eyes was deep.

I sat in the front passenger seat, watching the city lights flash by.

"Adrian?" Elena asked softly from the back.

I turned my head slightly. "Yes, Elena?"

"Why did he say those things?" she asked, her voice trembling. "About Lily... about her father?"

I paused, looking down at my hands, still stained with gun residue and mud. "Julian was a desperate man grasping at straws, Elena. He wanted to hurt me by insulting the only people who have brought light into this house in five years."

Elena looked down at Lily’s sleeping face, brushing a strand of brown hair away from her forehead. "Julian wasn't lying about everything, Adrian. Lily’s father... I never told you who he really was."

I signaled to the driver to pull over into a quiet overlook near Lake Michigan. I stepped out of the vehicle and opened the rear door, stepping into the night air with her.

"You don't owe me an explanation, Elena," I said gently. "Your past is yours."

"No," Elena said, tears brimming in her eyes again. "You risked your life for us tonight. You fought through an army for a child that isn't yours. You deserve the truth."

She took a deep breath, clutching her coat tightly around her shoulders.

"Four years ago, before I came to work for you, I was a legal assistant for the District Attorney's office," Elena revealed. "I was investigating corruption in the city's port authority. That's when I met a man named Marcus Vance."

My chest tightened. Marcus Vance. Julian’s younger brother. The black sheep of the Vance family who had supposedly disappeared overseas four years ago.

"Marcus was trying to get away from his family's criminal empire," Elena continued, her voice breaking. "He gave me evidence against Julian and the cartel. We fell in love. But when Julian found out Marcus was leaking information, Marcus vanished. A month later, I found out I was pregnant with Lily. I went into hiding, changed my name, and took the cleaning job at your mansion because I knew it was the only place Julian's men wouldn't dare search."

I stood there in absolute shock.

Lily wasn't just a random child who had wandered into my life. She was a Vance. She was my late wife Isabella's niece—my blood by marriage.

"She has Marcus's eyes," Elena whispered. "And she has Isabella's kindness. I wanted to tell you, Adrian... but I was terrified that if you knew she was a Vance, you would hate her."

I looked at the little girl sleeping peacefully in the back seat, clutching her battered stuffed rabbit.

A laugh—a true, genuine laugh—escaped my lips for the first time in years.

"Hate her?" I said, stepping closer and reaching out to softly touch Lily’s small cheek. "Elena... she is the only thing in this world that makes this bloodline worth saving."
