Chapter 7 - THE BASEMENT VAULT AND THE UNLIKELY ALLYThe darkness of the basement vault was absolute, thick, and suffocating. Heavy steel doors slammed shut with a hydraulic hiss, sealing Alejandro inside a windowless concrete bunker used decades ago to store physical bearer bonds and cartel ledgers during the height of the Villarreal empire's criminal era.

Alejandro lay on the cold concrete floor, his ribs throbbing with every ragged breath he took. His hands were bound behind his back with industrial zip-ties that cut deep into his skin.
Think, he told himself, forcing his panic down into the cold, calculating box where he kept his business strategies. Think. You are Alejandro Villarreal. You didn't build the largest logistics network in northern Mexico by giving up in a basement.
He shifted his weight, searching his pockets. His phone was gone—Mateo had stripped him of it before locking the door. But his fingers brushed against something small, hard, and metallic in his breast pocket: the titanium cufflink Camila had given him on their wedding day, engraved with their initials and fitted with a miniature emergency tracking chip he used for high-risk international travel.
It wasn't a phone, but it emitted a localized micro-signal that synced directly with his private defense satellite network—a system completely independent of Villarreal Global Holdings' corporate servers, set up specifically for moments of extreme betrayal.
Working his fingers behind his back, Alejandro pried the tiny mechanical clasp open, pressing the manual emergency beacon button three times—the universal distress signal for hostile takeover/kidnapping.
Now, all he could do was wait and pray that someone—anyone—on his private security detail outside the hospital payroll had noticed the ping.
Suddenly, the heavy steel door clicked.
Alejandro tensed, pressing his back against the damp concrete wall, bracing for Mateo or one of his father’s enforcers to come in and finish the job.
Instead, the door swung open just a few inches. A slender figure slipped inside, closing it silently behind them, and clicked on a small penlight.
The beam of light illuminated a face Alejandro never expected to see in a million years.
"Elena?" Alejandro breathed, staring at his father’s former personal secretary—a woman who had supposedly retired to Switzerland five years ago.
Elena pressed a finger to her lips, stepping quickly across the room and pulling a small Swiss army knife from her pocket, slicing through the zip-ties on Alejandro’s wrists in seconds.
"Don't speak too loud, Mr. Villarreal," Elena whispered, her hands trembling slightly. "Don Fernando’s guards are stationed at the end of the hall."
Alejandro rubbed his raw wrists, glaring at her with suspicion. "Why are you here? You worked for my father for twenty years. You helped him fake his death."
"I worked for him because my family was being held hostage in Colombia," Elena shot back, her voice sharp with suppressed emotion. "And I stayed because I was waiting for the right moment to tear his entire empire down from the inside. Do you think I didn't know what he did to Camila? Do you think I didn't see the files he ordered destroyed?"
May you like
Alejandro grabbed her shoulders, his eyes burning in the dim penlight. "Where is Camila? Where is my son?"
"They've been moved," Elena said urgently. "Don Fernando knows you triggered the emergency beacon. He's moving them to the old airfield outside Monterrey to put them on a private jet to South America tonight. If they leave Mexican airspace, you will never see them again."
