Chapter 4 - THE UNMASKINGRichard Vale let out a dry, arrogant chuckle. “I know exactly who you are, Martin. You’re a low-level handyman who got lucky flipping a few dilapidated apartments twenty years ago. You live in a cabin in the woods. You drive a beat-up Ford pickup truck. You think because you bought this hospital’s wing a decade ago under some shell company, you're a big shot?”

“You should do better research, Richard,” Arthur Vance interrupted, stepping forward and tapping a button on his tablet.

Simultaneously, every smartphone in the room—including those belonging to Richard’s legal aides—began buzzing violently. Emergency notifications, high-priority emails, and breaking news alerts broke the silence of the hospital corridor.

Richard frowned, pulling his phone from his coat pocket. His eyes widened as he read the headlines flickering across his screen.

WALL STREET JOURNAL BREAKING NEWS: Vanguard Citadel Assets Executes Hostile Takeover of Vale Enterprises. DA Richard Vale Under Federal Investigation for Campaign Finance Fraud.

“What… what is this?” Richard’s voice wavered for the first time.

“You see, Richard,” I said, taking a step toward him, forcing him to take a step back. “While you were driving here to threaten a father protecting his daughter, my legal team was executing a series of pre-arranged financial kill-switches.”

I took a paper from Arthur’s hands and held it up to Richard’s face.

“Item one: Vanguard Citadel has just liquidated every debt bond held by Vale Enterprises. Your family’s core holdings are officially bankrupt as of four minutes ago. Every bank account associated with Judith, Brandon, and your political campaign has been frozen by court order.”

Richard’s face lost all color. “You… you can’t do that!”

“Item two,” I continued, my voice ringing out like a judge pronouncing a death sentence. “The $14 million that Brandon stole and blamed on Emily? He transferred it through a server hosted on a private cloud domain. A domain that I own. We have the IP addresses, the keystroke logs, and the biometric signatures proving Brandon was the one who authorized every single transfer using Emily’s forged digital mark.”

Richard began to sweat profusely, his arrogant posture collapsing. “Martin… listen to me… we can work this out. Brandon is young, he made mistakes—”

“Item three,” I cut him off, stepping so close I could feel the heat radiating from his panicked forehead. “The federal indictment you mentioned? The US Attorney isn't coming for Emily, Richard. They’re coming for you. I delivered the evidence of your offshore bribery accounts to the Department of Justice three hours ago. The FBI is outside your office right now with a battering ram.”

As if on cue, Richard’s phone rang. The caller ID showed the Chief of Police.

Richard didn't answer. His hand was shaking so badly he dropped the phone onto the floor. It clattered against the linoleum, the screen cracking down the center.

“Get out of my sight,” I whispered. “And if you or anyone in your rotten family ever steps within a hundred yards of my daughter again, I won't use lawyers next time.”

Richard stared at me in terror, turning on his heel and nearly tripping over his own aides as he fled down the hallway.

I turned back toward Emily’s room. The war was far from over. Brandon was still in jail, but men like him—arrogant, entitled, backed into a corner—were at their most dangerous when they realized they had nothing left to lose.
