Chapter 6 - THE POISONED LEGACYThe room fell dead silent except for the crackle of the fireplace.

“Explain,” I commanded, my hands folding tightly over my knee.
Clara took a deep breath, sitting on the edge of an armchair. “Three years ago, I was engaged to Brandon. I thought he was charming, cultured. But then I started noticing things. His father, Julian Vale, was healthy. Then, suddenly, he grew weak, confused, bedridden. The doctors said it was a rare degenerative neurological condition.”
She opened the manila envelope, pulling out medical reports, bank statements, and autopsies obtained illegally from private labs.
“I found small vials of Thallium—a tasteless, odorless heavy metal poison—in Judith’s vanity nightstand,” Clara continued, her hands trembling slightly. “When I confronted Brandon, he didn't deny it. He laughed. He told me that if I said a word, he would ruin my family and make sure I was committed to an asylum. Two days later, I was involved in a mysterious car crash. I survived, but my family was terrified. They sent me to Europe to hide.”
Emily pulled the blanket closer around herself, tears welling in her eyes. “Judith… Judith made me drink tea with her every afternoon,” she whispered, her voice shaking violently. “Every single day at 4:00 PM. She always poured it herself.”
My heart stopped. The world around me seemed to spin off its axis.
“Emily,” I grabbed her shoulders, my voice cracking. “Have you been feeling sick? Dizzy? Numbness in your fingers?”
Emily looked down at her hands. “I… I thought it was just stress, Dad. My hands have been tingling for months. My stomach always hurt after tea…”
“God in Heaven,” I breathed, rage so absolute washing over me that my vision literally went red at the edges.
They weren't just framing her. They were slowly, systematically murdering my daughter right under my nose, inch by inch, day by day, making it look like a lingering illness so that when she 'succumbed,' Brandon would inherit everything she possessed without raising a single suspicion!
“Where is Brandon now?” I asked Clara, my voice terrifyingly soft.
“His uncle Richard pulled strings before his own arrest went through,” Clara said urgently. “Brandon was released on high-dollar bond two hours ago. He’s not at the mansion, Mr. Vance. He knows he’s finished legally. He took a heavy duffel bag from the house and hired a private boat out of the marina. But before he leaves the country… he’s coming to finish what he started. He knows Emily has his personal journal—the one where he kept all his private ledger codes.”
Right on cue, the lights inside the house flickered—and went completely dark.

The low hum of the estate’s backup generator failed to kick in. Out in the driveway, the high-voltage perimeter security fences buzzed weakly, then fell silent.
Someone had just cut the main power lines to the estate.
