Chapter 8 - THE CHATEAU ON LAKE LEMANThe black Mercedes Maybach pulled through the wrought-iron gates of an isolated, nineteenth-century stone chateau perched high on the cliffs overlooking Lake Leman in Switzerland. The water below was a deep, ink-black mirror reflecting the jagged, snow-capped peaks of the Alps.

Eleanor stepped out of the vehicle, holding the baby securely against her chest. The cold Swiss wind whipped her dark hair across her face, but she didn’t flinch.

Waiting on the grand stone portico stood a tall, silver-haired man wearing an expensive tailored overcoat. A faint, arrogant smile played on his lips—a smile that was an exact, chilling mirror of Eleanor’s own.

Jonathan Montgomery.

He looked older, lines etched deep around his eyes from years of hiding and high-stakes paranoia, but the expensive Italian shoes and the casual arrogance were unchanged.

“Well, well, big sister,” Jonathan said, spreading his arms wide as he stepped forward. “I must admit, I didn't think you’d have the stomach to track me all the way across the Atlantic. And you brought my little investment with you, too.”

Eleanor didn't move an inch. She stood like a sentinel on the stone steps, her body forming an absolute shield around the baby.

“You’re trespassing, Jonathan,” Eleanor said, her voice cutting through the alpine wind. “The Swiss authorities were notified before our wheels touched down in Zurich. Your offshore accounts have been frozen, your shell companies dismantled, and your corporate warrants are active in forty-two countries.”

Jonathan’s smile vanished instantly. His eyes hardened into dangerous slits.

“You think a few frozen accounts and some European warrants stop me?” Jonathan hissed, taking another step forward. “The trust is mine, Eleanor! The moment that child reaches maturity—or the moment I legally reclaim her—every cent of Montgomery Enterprises reverts to my control. You’re holding my ticket back to the top.”

“You don't have a ticket, Jonathan,” a cool, calm voice echoed from behind the stone pillars.

Jonathan froze.

From the shadows of the portico stepped two Swiss federal police inspectors, flanked by a local magistrate holding a thick leather-bound dossier.

“Jonathan Montgomery, alias Jean-Paul Vance,” the magistrate announced in crisp, accented English, holding up an official arrest warrant. “You are formally charged with international corporate fraud, abandonment of a dependent minor, and identity falsification.”

Jonathan’s face turned the color of ash. He spun around toward the edge of the cliff where a private helicopter sat idling on the lower helipad, but three tactical officers stepped out from the trees, blocking his only escape route.
