Chapter 19 - The Final Stand

The heavy oak doors of the family suite groaned under a massive, violent impact, splintering down the middle as a boot kicked through the wood.

Ethan stepped in front of us instantly, raising both pistols, his stance wide and unyielding. “Get behind the reinforced panic room wall, Clara. Now!”

“I’m not leaving you!” I cried, pulling Noah behind the heavy steel bulkhead frame built into the master closet.

Three masked operatives swarmed through the shattered bedroom door, their rifles aimed directly at Ethan. The leader stepped forward, lowering his mask just enough to reveal a jagged scar across his jawline—a face from Ethan’s past.

“It’s over, Ethan,” the leader hissed, a cruel smile twisting his lips. “The council sends its regards. The Caldwell dynasty dies tonight.”

“You talk too much,” Ethan snarled.

Before the operatives could pull their triggers, Ethan dropped to one knee, sweeping his leg in a vicious arc that caught the lead gunman behind the knees, sending him crashing hard to the hardwood floor. At the same time, Ethan’s pistols barked twice, neutralizing the two flanking operatives with pinpoint precision.

The leader roared in fury, lunging forward with a combat knife. Ethan parried the blow, but the knife sliced deep into his shoulder, drawing a dark stream of blood across his shirt.

I raised my sidearm from behind the panic room barrier, aiming carefully past Ethan, and fired.

The bullet struck the leader directly in the shoulder, spinning him around with a sharp cry of pain. Ethan didn't hesitate; he drove the butt of his pistol into the man’s temple with bone-crushing force.

The intruder crumpled instantly, unconscious.

Silence reclaimed the shattered bedroom, broken only by the ragged, heavy breathing of the two of us.

Ethan staggered back, clutching his bleeding shoulder, his knees buckling slightly.

“Ethan!” I screamed, dropping my weapon and rushing to his side, throwing my arm around his waist to bear his weight.

“I’m... I’m okay,” Ethan gritted through his teeth, pressing a hand against the wound. “Just a flesh wound.”

Noah peeked out from the panic room, tears streaming down his face, but his legs remained steady beneath him as he ran to us, wrapping his small arms tightly around Ethan’s waist. “Dad! Are you okay?”

Ethan managed a weak, exhausted smile, resting his free hand on Noah’s head. “Never better, buddy. Never better.”
