Chapter 5 - The Spider’s Web

The rain had begun to fall in heavy, relentless sheets by the time Ethan’s bulletproof sedan tore out of the underground exit, splashing through the ruined iron gates of the estate. The mansion behind us was still smoking, a smoldering monument to betrayal and violence.

Inside the car, the silence was suffocating. Ethan sat in the passenger seat, his expression carved from granite, furiously typing commands into a heavily encrypted laptop. The screen glowed with satellite maps of the city and thermal feeds of the abandoned botanical gardens downtown.

“She thinks she can back me into a corner,” Ethan muttered, his voice dangerously low. “She thinks twenty years of loyal service gives her the right to dictate my bloodline.”

“Why would Margaret do this?” I asked, staring out the rain-streaked window as the city blur rushed past. “Money? Power?”

“Both,” Ethan replied without looking up from his screen. “Margaret’s brother was Victor Vance—the man who controlled the eastern docks before I dismantled his syndicate five years ago. She spent all this time playing the loyal nursemaid while plotting the ultimate revenge: stealing my legacy, breaking my bloodline, and handing the Caldwell empire over to the remnants of a dying cartel.”

The realization hit me like a physical blow. Noah wasn't just a sick child; he was a pawn in an inter-mafia war for supremacy, and I had unknowingly stumbled right into the crosshairs of a ruthless vendetta.

“We’re approaching the botanical gardens,” Ethan announced, snapping the laptop shut and reaching for a sleek, suppressed pistol from the glove compartment. He checked the magazine with a practiced, fluid motion. “Clara, listen to me very carefully. When we arrive, stay in the vehicle until I clear the perimeter. If I don’t return in ten minutes, you take this car and drive straight out of the city. Do you understand?”

May you like

“No,” I said, turning to look him straight in the eyes. “I’m not staying behind. I’m the one who got him walking. I’m the one who found the pills. Noah knows my voice; he’ll look for me. We go together.”

Ethan stared at me for a long, intense moment. For the first time, the ruthless mafia boss vanished, leaving behind only a desperate father. He gave a single, sharp nod. “Stay behind me. No matter what you see.”
