Chapter 20 - Dawn of a New Era

Three days later, the smoke had cleared, and the federal task force—along with state authorities—secured the perimeter once and for all. The mysterious council behind the midnight attack had been systematically dismantled as surviving members attempted to flee across state lines, caught in a coordinated sweep orchestrated by federal prosecutors and Ethan’s remaining loyal syndicate networks.

The Caldwell estate was quiet once more, bathed in the golden, unobstructed light of an early autumn morning.

I stood on the front terrace, watching Noah chase his soccer ball across the lawn, his laughter ringing out bright and unburdened by fear or sickness. The gates were open, not as a challenge to enemies, but as an invitation to a normal life.

Footsteps approached softly from behind.

I turned to see Ethan walking toward me. His shoulder was bandaged under a fresh black button-down shirt, his posture upright and commanding as ever, but the cold, impenetrable wall in his eyes was completely gone.

“The federal attorney called,” Ethan said softly, stopping beside me and leaning his arms against the stone balustrade. “The council is finished. Every asset they held has been seized. We are completely, finally free.”

I let out a long, shuddering breath of pure relief, leaning my head against his uninjured shoulder. “No more ghosts?”

“No more ghosts,” Ethan promised, turning his head to press a warm, lingering kiss to my temple. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.

I looked up at him, my breath catching in my throat.

Ethan opened the box to reveal a simple, elegant platinum band inlaid with a single, flawless diamond.

“You walked into a house of poison and war, Clara, and you brought light back into every dark corner of my life,” Ethan said, his voice dropping into a deep, earnest register that made my heart race. “I don't want you here as a nanny, and I don't want you here just as a partner. I want you here forever.”

Tears welled up in my eyes, but this time, they were tears of absolute joy. I nodded, a radiant smile breaking across my face.

May you like

“Yes,” I whispered. “Yes, absolutely.”

In the distance, Noah kicked the ball high into the air, cheering as it sailed past the imaginary goalposts, his legs strong, steady, and running forward into a future we had built together.
