Chapter 2 - SHADOWS OF THE LINEAGE

By 3:00 AM, the Hale estate was under lockdown.

Noah and Clara were sleeping peacefully in their wing—the first night in three years they hadn't needed high-dose painkiller injections. Medical scans performed by the family’s private doctor showed full nerve regeneration. It was biologically impossible, yet undeniable.

In the executive study, Marcus poured himself a double scotch, his hands trembling.

"He's not a normal boy," Serene said, pacing the room. Her eyes were red from crying. "Marcus, you gave your word. The universe gave us back our children, and you're letting Vanessa treat that boy like a biological hazard!"

"Serene, use your head!" Marcus slammed his glass on the mahogany desk. "Hale Enterprises controls 40% of the nation's logistics and energy grid. My father built this empire with blood. If I adopt a street kid with no bloodline, the board of directors will initiate a vote of no confidence! Vanessa is already building a faction against me!"

Right on cue, the double doors swung open. Vanessa stepped in, holding a encrypted tablet.

"It's worse than we thought," she said coldly. "The video of your 'joke' at the gala has already leaked onto social media. It has forty million views. The public is calling you a miracle father—and demanding you fulfill your adoption promise."

"Delete it!" Marcus ordered.

"I can't. Someone with military-grade encryption is protecting the mirror links," Vanessa said, leaning over the desk. "Furthermore, I ran a deep background search on where this 'Leo' came from. He showed up in the slums three months ago. No birth certificate. No medical records. No parents."

She swiped the tablet, showing a grainy security camera footage from an abandoned alleyway.

"Look at this, Marcus."

In the video, Leo was seen sitting next to a dying stray dog. He touched the animal, a faint blue glow emitted from his hands, and the dog stood up, completely healed. But what happened next made Marcus’s blood run cold.

In the background of the video, standing in the shadows watching Leo, was a man in a tailored dark grey suit—wearing a signet ring engraved with a crest Marcus hadn't seen in fifteen years.

The crest of the Vance Syndicate.

"Julian Vance..." Marcus whispered, his face draining of color.

"Precisely," Vanessa smirked. "Your former business partner turned mortal enemy. The man who orchestrated the car crash three years ago that paralyzed Noah and Clara."

Marcus felt a chill hit his spine. "You think... Leo is a weapon sent by Julian?"

"I think Julian engineered this whole 'miracle' to force his way into our family through an adopted child," Vanessa sneered. "If you adopt Leo, you are inviting Julian Vance's Trojan horse right into our vault."

Suddenly, the security alarm blared across the estate.

ALERT: PERIMETER BREACH AT SOUTH GATE.

Marcus grabbed his hidden firearm from the desk drawer. He and Vanessa rushed down the grand hallway, accompanied by eight tactical guards. When they reached the courtyard, they found the massive steel gates ripped off their hinges as if hit by a freight train.

Sitting on the edge of the marble fountain in the center of the yard was Leo.

He was waiting for them.

"I came back for my adoption papers," the boy said softly.
