Chapter 5 - THE COUNTER-ATTACK"Mr. Reynolds, step away from the phone, please," Detective Miller said, his hand instinctively dropping toward his holster.

The trap had snapped shut with terrifying precision. In less than sixty seconds, my undeniable evidence of their attempted murder of my daughter had been completely neutralized by a fabricated, high-tech conspiracy framing me as a drug-smuggling, unstable fugitive planning to kidnap my own child.

"Detective, look at the metadata of that video," I said, forcing my voice to remain steady despite the roaring in my ears. "Anyone with basic tech skills can spoof a smart-hub timestamp. Look at my evidence—it's physical audio and video from the garage!"

"Your evidence is a file on a personal device that hasn't been forensically verified yet," Detective Miller replied, his professional detachment cutting like a knife. "Whereas this smart-hub footage is backed by cloud-authenticated logs from our cyber division. Right now, Mr. Reynolds, you are facing serious allegations of evidence fabrication, conspiracy, and child endangerment."

Taylor stepped forward, playing the grieving, betrayed spouse to absolute perfection. Her lower lip quivered.

"Mark... why are you doing this?" she whispered, tears spilling over her eyelashes. "I tried to protect you. I covered for your erratic behavior for months because I loved you. But framing my mother for trying to murder our daughter? That crosses a line I can't forgive. Detective, please... ensure he doesn't come near Lily."

"Social Services is already filing an emergency restraining order," Social Worker Sarah Jenkins added, stepping out of Lily's room with a clipboard. "Mr. Reynolds, you are ordered to vacate the premises immediately. Any violation will result in immediate arrest."

I looked at the three of them—Taylor, Evelyn, and the system they had so effortlessly manipulated. They thought they had checkmated me. They thought a man backed into a corner would panic, scream, and destroy his own case.

Instead, I smiled.

It was a slow, chilling smile that made Taylor’s synthetic tears freeze in real-time.

"You're very good, Taylor," I said softly, stepping back and raising my hands in mock surrender. "You and your mother spent years building this little empire of lies. But you forgot one golden rule of corporate espionage and dirty divorces."

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed. "What are you rambling about, Mark?"

"Never trust a cloud server that you don't own," I said smoothly.

I pulled a second phone—a burner device—out of my inside coat pocket and tapped the screen twice.

"Detective Miller, before you confiscate my primary phone, do me a favor. Check your department email inbox right now. I sent a secure packet to your official badge five minutes ago."

Detective Miller frowned, pulled out his department-issued smartphone, and tapped his screen. His eyes scanned the incoming email. As he read the attachment, the color slowly drained from his face.

"What... what is this?" Miller muttered.

"That," I said, my voice echoing down the hospital corridor, "is the financial ledger of Vance & Associates LLC—Evelyn’s shell company—showing three hundred thousand dollars funneled into a private cyber-forensics firm last Tuesday to purchase custom deepfake scripts targeting my smart-hub. Along with bank statements proving that Taylor’s lawyer has been paid retainer fees directly from Evelyn’s slush fund."

Taylor’s face lost all its color. Her jaw went slack.

"And," I added, taking a step closer to Evelyn, "that's also the confession recording of the domestic worker you bribed last week to plant that fake powder in my closet. She cracked under police questioning twenty minutes ago, Detective. Her statement is attached as PDF file number four."

Silence descended upon the hospital hallway so heavy you could hear the hum of the vending machine down the hall.

Evelyn turned her head sharply toward Taylor, her face contorted in sudden, blistering panic. "You idiot," Evelyn hissed. "You told me the staff was loyal!"

Detective Miller looked up from his phone, his professional demeanor replaced by absolute, unadulterated disgust. He clicked his handcuffs together with a sharp metallic snap.

"Taylor Vance and Evelyn Vance," Detective Miller announced, his voice ringing like a gavel. "You are under arrest for conspiracy, obstruction of justice, fabrication of evidence, and child endangerment. Turn around and place your hands behind your back."
