Chapter 8 - The Showdown"He was everything to me," I said. I pulled a small digital recorder from my pocket—the one I’d been keeping for three years, hoping for a moment of confession.

Vanessa froze. "Did you... did you just record that?"

"Every word," I said.

She lunged at me with the shovel. I dodged, the metal blade slicing the air where my head had been. I scrambled back, but she was faster, driven by desperation. She cornered me against the glass wall.

"Give it to me!" she shrieked.

"No," I said.

Just as she raised the shovel to strike, the glass door of the greenhouse exploded inward.

Alessandro stood there, his coat dripping with rain. He looked at Vanessa, then at me. His gaze shifted to the soil she had been digging.

"Is it there, Vanessa?" he asked softly. "The real ledger? The one that links your father to my father’s murder?"
