Chapter 4 - Into the Lion’s DenThe freezing rain stung Elena’s face as she sprinted across the slippery copper roof of the conservatory, the shouts of the guards fading behind her in the sprawling estate grounds. Her lungs burned, but adrenaline kept her moving. She dropped heavily onto the manicured lawns below, rolling into the thick, protective cover of the hedge maze.

She couldn't go to the police. Julian Vance owned half the city’s judiciary system, and anyone wearing the Vance name on a local warrant would find themselves locked away in a private psychiatric ward before sunrise.

She needed leverage that money couldn't buy, and protection that Julian's goons couldn't pierce.

She pulled out her burner phone—a prepaid device she kept hidden for emergencies—and dialed a number she had memorized from an old legal document locked in her father's private study years ago. It belonged to Ethan Vance, the estranged cousin banished from the family empire a decade ago after trying to expose Julian's corporate embezzlement.

The phone rang three times before a gruff, exhausted voice answered. "If this is a debt collector, lose the number."

"Ethan," Elena gasped, pressing her back against a damp hedge as flashlights swept across the distant lawn. "It's Elena."

Silence stretched on the other end of the line, heavy and tense. Then, sharply: "Elena? Are you out of your mind calling this line? Julian monitors every secure network in the state."

"He doesn't know about this phone," she replied frantically. "And he doesn't know what I have. Vivian broke grandmother's sapphire pendant tonight. Inside... there was a confession, Ethan. Proof that Julian stole the estate from Lord Arthur. They're hunting me right now."

A sharp intake of breath echoed through the receiver. The ambient noise in Ethan's background—the hum of computer servers and clacking keyboards—suddenly went dead silent.

"Listen to me very carefully," Ethan said, his voice dropping to a chilling, resolute whisper. "Do not go back to the house. Do not trust a single soul with the last name Vance. Meet me at the abandoned shipyard on Pier 47 in forty minutes. Bring the parchment. We’re going to take everything back."

The line clicked dead. Elena pocketed the phone, her heart hammering against her ribs. Pier 47 was notorious—a desolate wasteland of rusted containers and dark water. It was the perfect place for an ambush. But it was also her only way out.
