Chapter 5 - Shadows at Pier 47The rusted cranes of Pier 47 loomed like skeletal giants against the bruised, neon-lit sky of the city's industrial district. Fog rolled in thick off the dark harbor, swallowing the light of flickering streetlamps and turning every shadow into a potential threat.

Elena gripped her jacket tight, the journal containing the damning parchment pressed securely against her chest. Her footsteps echoed hollowly on the damp concrete.

"Ethan?" she called out softly, her voice swallowed by the howling coastal wind.

No answer. Only the rhythmic dripping of stagnant water and the distant groan of shifting steel containers.

Suddenly, a pair of blinding headlights cut through the fog. A black sedan screeched to a halt ten yards away, its engine roaring in the empty night. The doors flew open, and two figures stepped out.

Relief flooded Elena for a split second—until the figures stepped into the dull amber glow of a nearby security light. It wasn't Ethan.

It was Julian Vance, flanked by two towering enforcers, and behind them, stepping out with a smug, victorious smirk, was Vivian.

"Playing hide and seek, my sweet daughter?" Julian’s voice echoed, cold, smooth, and laced with absolute venom. He stepped forward, his tailored overcoat fluttering in the wind. "Did you really think a half-witted girl could outsmart thirty years of empire-building?"

Elena backed away, her hand instinctively dropping to her pocket. "You're a fraud, Julian. You murdered my real uncle, you stole this family's name, and you've been living a lie."

Julian's face twisted into an ugly, mask-like scowl. The polite, charismatic CEO facade vanished instantly, revealing the desperate, ruthless criminal underneath. "Arthur was weak! He deserved what he got, and so do you for digging into things that don't concern you. Hand over the parchment, Elena. If you give it to me now, I might let you catch a bus out of town before I lock you away forever."

"You'll never get it," Elena said defiantly, stepping closer to the edge of the dark, churning water of the pier.

Vivian laughed, a high, mocking sound. "Oh, stop being dramatic, Elena. Toss it here, or watch us feed your precious butler Marcus to the fishes. Oh, didn't I mention? Marcus didn't survive our little interrogation back at the estate."

Elena stopped breathing. The world tilted sideways. Marcus... dead?

Before Julian could lunge forward, a deafening screech of tires shattered the tense silence.

From behind Julian's sedan, a second vehicle—a battered, matte-black SUV—slammed at full speed into the side of Julian's car, sending metal crunching into metal in an explosive collision of sparks and smoke!
