Chapter 8 - JUSTICE SERVED AND A NEW BEGINNING

The jury deliberated for a remarkably short duration—exactly forty-two minutes.
When the jury foreman stood up to read the verdict, the courtroom held its collective breath so sharply that the rustle of paper sounded like thunder.
"On all counts of aggravated domestic assault, malicious destruction of communication devices during an active medical emergency, and willful deprivation of emergency medical care... the jury finds the defendant, David Vance, Guilty."
A collective murmur rippled through the gallery.
Sylvia let out a sharp, choked sob from across the aisle, burying her face in her hands as reality finally crashed down around her.
The judge didn't waste any time. With a heavy, resolute strike of his wooden gavel, the sentence was handed down: Fourteen years in federal prison, without the possibility of parole for the first ten years, alongside immediate disbarment and a permanent restraining order protecting myself and my unborn child.
David didn't scream. He didn't protest. He simply closed his eyes as two federal marshals stepped up behind him, clicked the steel handcuffs into place for the final time, and led him away through the heavy oak doors at the back of the courtroom—straight toward a very long, very cold decade behind bars.
Six months later.
The spring sun was streaming brightly through the tall, arched windows of my father’s private estate library, casting a warm golden glow across polished mahogany bookshelves and Persian rugs.
In my arms cradled a tiny, perfect bundle of life—my healthy, beautiful baby girl, who had fought her way into this world with all the fierce, unyielding resilience of her mother and grandfather.
My father walked over, a soft, proud smile creaking across his usually stern face, carrying a small silver rattle. He gently stroked the baby's soft dark hair, looking down at her with an expression of pure, unadulterated adoration.
"What are we naming her, Anna?" my father asked softly.
I looked down at my daughter, watching her tiny fingers curl instinctively around my thumb with astonishing strength.
"Victoria," I whispered, smiling as the spring breeze rustled the fresh green leaves outside the window. "Her name is Victoria."

My father laughed softly, pressing a proud kiss to the top of my head.
"A fitting name," he said, looking out toward the bright horizon. "After all... justice always prevails in the end."
