Chapter 7 - The Arrest of the AccomplicesWhile Victoria picked through the ruins of her former life inside the mansion, federal investigators were busy dismantling the outer circle of the Vance family’s corruption network.

Arthur Vance’s arrogance had not stopped within the walls of his home; it extended deep into the corporate boardrooms and legal offices where corrupt accountants and complicit family lawyers had helped him launder embezzled funds.

At 9:00 p.m. that same evening, special agents executed simultaneous search warrants across downtown Chicago.

Among the arrested was Marcus Sterling—the family’s longtime corporate attorney who had notarized the fraudulent power-of-attorney documents and helped set up the offshore shell companies used to hide the stolen education trust funds.

Marcus thought his status and wealth would protect him. He was sitting in an upscale steakhouse downtown when three federal agents slipped into the booth on either side of him.

"Marcus Sterling, you’re under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud and falsification of federal legal instruments," the lead agent announced, slapping a pair of cold steel cuffs onto his wrists before he could even finish his glass of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Marcus’s face turned white with panic as restaurant patrons stared in stunned silence.

"This is insane! I’m an officer of the court!" Marcus protested, struggling against the cuffs. "I represent Arthur Vance! I have attorney-client privilege!"

"Privilege doesn't cover active participation in wire fraud and grand larceny, counselor," the agent replied smoothly, pulling a signed federal warrant from his jacket pocket. "And by the way—Audrey Vance sends her regards."

The arrest of Marcus Sterling sent shockwaves through the corporate elite who had quietly supported Arthur’s financial schemes for years. Within twenty-four hours, three other high-profile business associates resigned from their board positions, terrified that their own illicit dealings with Vance Holdings would be exposed next.

The house of cards wasn't just leaning; it had been blasted into a million pieces.
