Chapter 9 - The Intelligence BriefingSix months later, deep within the ultra-secure underground briefing rooms of the Defense Intelligence Agency outside Washington, D.C., the air smelled of ozone, hot electronics, and high-stakes operations.

I stood before a massive, wall-sized digital display showing real-time global intelligence feeds, financial tracking models, and node analysis charts used to intercept international illicit funding networks.

At the center of the room sat a dozen senior military officials, directors, and cybersecurity experts.

"Lieutenant Vance," the Director of Intelligence addressed me, tapping a stylus against his tablet as he brought up a complex financial tracking schematic on the main screen. "The illicit offshore network you managed to map out during your final semester at Westbridge... we’ve used your methodology to crack an international money-laundering syndicate operating across three continents."

I straightened my posture, my hands clasped neatly behind my back.

"Sir, financial corruption leaves a digital footprint, no matter how carefully the perpetrators try to hide behind shell companies and forged signatures," I reported clearly. "You just have to know where to look."

The Director smiled, a look of immense respect crossing his weathered features.

"Well, Lieutenant, your former father’s corporate crimes accidentally provided us with the exact blueprint needed to dismantle a multi-million-dollar underground banking ring," the Director noted with a dry chuckle. "Arthur Vance is currently serving a twelve-year sentence, Julian took a plea deal for probation, and your mother is living in quiet obscurity."

He paused, stepping closer to the display screen.

"The DIA is launching a new elite financial warfare division," the Director continued, locking eyes with me. "They want you to head it. Starting today."

I felt a surge of cold, absolute triumph warm my chest—not just from the promotion, but from the realization of how far I had traveled from that hot, dusty stone courtyard at Westbridge Military Academy where my cap had spun into the dirt.

"I accept the assignment, sir," I said firmly.
