Chapter 3 - The Ghost ReturnsLivingston, Montana, was a quiet tourist town on the surface, but beneath its picturesque facade of historic brick buildings and fly-fishing shops ran a dark current of land-grab corruption. For the past eighteen months, Sheriff Cole and a syndicate of local developers had been forcing out independent landowners through rigged tax liens, manufactured code violations, and outright intimidation.

My five-acre property—situated right at the mouth of Paradise Valley, complete with water rights and an old gold-mining claim—was the final piece of their multi-million-dollar resort puzzle.
Rachel had been their inside agent.
The pieces clicked together with terrifying clarity as I drove down Route 89 toward our ranch. The sudden trip to Bozeman "to see her mother." The missing financial statements. The way she had pushed me to sign those "standard county easement forms" without reading them.
She hadn't fallen out of love with me; she had been bought off. Or worse, blackmailed.
“Are you going to say anything?” Rachel snapped, breaking the silence as the ranch gates came into view. “Or are you just going to sit there brooding like some psycho killer in a movie?”
I pulled the truck to a stop in front of the weathered timber farmhouse, cut the engine, and turned to look at her.
“How much, Rachel?”
She froze, her hand hovering over the door handle. “What?”
“How much did Travis pay you for my signature on the Paradise Valley easement?” My voice was icy. “Was it fifty grand? A hundred? Or did he promise you a clean break and a one-way ticket to Seattle once the resort deal closed?”
Her face drained of every drop of color. She opened her mouth to speak, but only a dry gasp came out.
“You... you don't know what you're saying,” she stammered, her eyes darting toward the front door.
“I know that the satellite phone I just used downloaded every financial transaction tied to the Park County Sheriff’s Department,” I said, stepping out of the truck and walking around to open her door. “I know that your personal checking account received a forty-thousand-dollar wire transfer from 'Cascade Land Holdings LLC' three days ago. And I know that Cascade Land Holdings is a shell corporation registered under Travis Cole’s cousin.”
Rachel stumbled out of the truck, backing away from me as if I were holding a knife. The defiance was completely gone, replaced by the primal panic of a cornered animal.
“Ethan... please,” she whimpered, her voice breaking. “You don't understand. They threatened me. They said if I didn't help them push you out, they would reopen that old investigation from your last deployment—they said they'd make sure you were court-martialed for things that happened in Baghdad, things the military keeps buried!”
I stopped in my tracks. My eyes narrowed.

“What did you just say?”
Before she could answer, the roar of heavy diesel engines shattered the mountain silence.
