Chapter 5 - The Web Unravels“This is an outrage!” Cole shouted, his voice cracking as two federal marshals stepped smoothly into his personal space, their hands resting firmly on their sidearms. “I’m the elected law enforcement officer of this county! You can't just roll in here like a third-world junta—”

“Actually, Sheriff, we can,” Colonel Vance interrupted smoothly, tapping the digital tablet in his hand. “Under Section 804 of the federal defense code and emergency jurisdiction protocols triggered by active interference in military intelligence assets, federal oversight supersedes local authority when a state actor targets a retired Tier-1 operator with malicious prosecution and extortion.”
Cole swallowed hard, his eyes darting frantically toward Rachel, who was still standing by the porch like a ghost.
“Rachel,” Cole blurted out, desperation leaking into his voice. “Tell them! Tell them this is just a local property dispute—”
“Shut up, Travis,” Rachel whispered, her voice barely audible. She didn't look at him; she stared down at her own boots.
“Oh, she’s done talking, Sheriff,” Vance said with a grim smile. “In fact, Mrs. Hayes has already been cooperating with our digital forensics team. Her bank records, text logs, and signed audio confessions were synced to our servers the moment Commander Hayes initiated the satellite uplink.”
Cole’s head snapped toward Rachel, betrayal flashing across his features. “You little bitch... you folded that fast?”
“Watch your language, Sheriff,” one of the federal marshals warned, stepping forward and forcefully spinning Cole around, slamming his hands against the hood of his own cruiser and snapping heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.
The click of the handcuffs sounded like a gunshot in the quiet Montana afternoon.
I stood watching the scene unfold, my hands shoved deep into the pockets of my flannel shirt. The milkshake stain on my chest had dried into a stiff pink crust, but I didn't care anymore. The humiliation of the diner was nothing compared to the cold satisfaction of watching a corrupt tyrant's empire crumble in real time.
“Take him to the federal holding facility in Bozeman,” Vance ordered the marshals. “And impound that cruiser. I want every hard drive, dispatch log, and financial ledger pulled apart by tomorrow morning.”

As Cole was shoved into the back of the tactical transport truck, cursing and thrashing against the restraints, his eyes locked onto mine through the reinforced glass window.
It was the look of a man who realized he had kicked a sleeping dragon—and there was nowhere left to run.
