Chapter 9 - A New Dawn at Carter LogisticsThree months later.

The autumn chill had settled over Chicago, but inside the executive suite of Carter Logistics, the atmosphere was warmer and more vibrant than it had been in twenty-six years.

The heavy, suffocating aura of deceit and corporate pretense was gone, replaced by genuine transparency and hard work.

I sat at the expansive glass executive desk—the one Richard had arrogantly claimed as his own—reviewing the final quarterly earnings report. Under my direct leadership, the company’s net profit had surged by thirty-eight percent, and our compliance ratings were the highest in the industry’s history.

My phone buzzed on the desk.

It was a video call from Noah, calling from his university campus in Seattle.

I swiped to answer, and my son’s smiling face lit up the screen.

“Hey, Mom! Just wanted to check in before my morning lectures,” Noah said cheerfully, holding up a cup of coffee. “How are things holding down the fort back in Chicago?”

“Everything is running like clockwork, sweetheart,” I smiled, leaning back in my chair. “We just closed our biggest domestic partnership deal of the year.”

“That’s my mom,” Noah laughed proudly. “You know... Dad used to say you didn't have the stomach for corporate warfare. Looks like he couldn't have been more wrong.”

“Some people mistake quiet observation for weakness, Noah,” I replied softly. “Never make that mistake.”

“Never, Mom. Love you.”

“Love you too, sweetie. Have a great day.”

I hung up the phone, feeling a profound, unshakeable peace settle deep into my soul.
