Chapter 2 - The 8 AM Shockwave

At exactly 7:59 AM, the heavy mahogany front doors of Margaret’s sprawling estate echoed with the heavy, unyielding pound of official knocks.
Inside the grand dining room, the remnants of yesterday's expensive Christmas feast still sat on the long marble table. Margaret was sipping her imported morning coffee, wearing a silk robe and lecturing Mark about how I would inevitably crawl back by noon. Vanessa was scrolling through her phone, smugly sipping a mimosa, while Richard smirked, confident that his threatening text message had broken my spine.
The loud knocking interrupted them.
"For goodness sake, who could that be at this hour?" Margaret frowned, waving a dismissive hand toward the foyer. "Mark, go tell the delivery driver to leave it on the porch."
Mark pulled open the door, expecting a courier. Instead, he found two state police officers in crisp uniforms, flanked by an austere woman in a sharp navy blue pantsuit holding a heavy leather briefcase.
"Are you Mark Harrison?" the lead officer asked, his voice flat and authoritative.
"Yes... I am. Is there a problem?" Mark stammered, the color instantly draining from his face.
"We have a court-ordered warrant for the premises, a freeze order on all primary and secondary trust accounts associated with this residence, and a federal subpoena for financial records," the woman in the suit announced, stepping past him without waiting for an invitation. She was Sarah Vance, a senior forensic accountant and special investigator for the state banking commission.
The commotion drew Margaret, Vanessa, and Richard out of the dining room.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Margaret shrieked, her aristocratic composure shattering instantly as she marched into the hallway. "Do you know who I am? I demand to know what you think you're doing in my home!"
Sarah Vance didn't even blink. She pulled a thick document from her briefcase and dropped it onto the glass entry table.
"Margaret Harrison, you, your son-in-law Richard Vance, and your late husband’s estate holdings are under formal investigation for wire fraud, grand larceny, and systematic embezzlement exceeding four point two million dollars," Sarah stated clearly, her voice echoing off the marble floors.
Vanessa dropped her mimosa glass. It shattered into a thousand glittering pieces against the floor—an ironic echo of the bar cart from the night before.
"That's—that's insane!" Richard yelled, his face turning a violent shade of purple as he lunged forward. "You have no right! I am a respected professional! Who authorized this?!"
From behind the officers, I stepped into the foyer.
I was holding Lily’s small school backpack in one hand and a thick, fireproof metal box in the other. Emily stood a few steps behind me, her bandaged arm visible beneath her coat, her head held high.
Margaret spun around, her eyes bulging with absolute rage when she saw me.
"You!" she screamed, pointing a trembling finger at my chest. "You ungrateful, pathetic little snake! You brought police to my home over a family spat?!"
I walked past her, setting the metal box right on top of Richard's financial portfolio. I looked my mother dead in the eyes, my voice completely devoid of fear or hesitation.
"You called my wife trailer trash and threw away her mother's only memory," I said quietly. "You broke glass over her head. You thought you could scare us into submission."

I tapped the steel box with my knuckles.
"This isn't a family spat, Mother. This is an audit. And Richard is going to prison."
