Chapter 1 - THE CLOUD'S REVENGE

The sterile smell of the emergency room antiseptic did little to cool the rage burning in my veins. My hands, hardened by decades of service and discipline, trembled as I gripped the edge of the examination table. Emily lay pale and shivering beneath a thin hospital blanket, her breath shallow. Every faint gasp she took felt like a physical blow to my chest.
Dr. Bennett turned away from the chart, his jaw tight. "The bruising on her wrists is definitively defensive, coupled with pattern trauma indicative of adult finger pressure. She was physically restrained for an extended period. More concerning is her blood panel—she has heavy trace amounts of potent sedatives in her system that were not prescribed by her OB-GYN."
Across the trauma bay, standing near the sliding glass doors like an untouchable sentinel, Margaret crossed her arms. Her face remained a mask of practiced, cold indifference.
"She is mentally unstable, Doctor," Margaret said, her voice dripping with venomous theatricality. "She tried to smother her own son with a pillow during a psychotic break. We had to hold her down for the baby's safety. Anyone with half a brain would have done the exact same thing."
Vanessa, standing beside her mother-in-law, nodded frantically, dabbing at dry eyes with a designer handkerchief. "It's true. Daniel was so distraught he couldn't even look at her. We’ve been protecting that innocent baby from his own mother."
"Liar," I whispered, the word tearing from my throat as I stepped toward them.
Before I could close the distance, the pocket of my tactical jacket buzzed. My phone screen flashed: Baby Monitor Cloud Backup - New Sync Complete (Duration: 4 Hours, 12 Minutes).
My heart hammered against my ribs. I pulled out the device, hooked my portable Bluetooth speaker to the headphone jack, and hit play before anyone could move.
The tinny, ambient hum of Emily’s nursery filled the harsh lights of the ER. For a second, there was only the sound of a newborn crying. Then, Margaret’s sharp, authoritative voice cut through the speaker.
"Sign the custody waiver, Emily. Surrender your parental rights to Daniel, or you will never see Noah feed again. You are postpartum, fragile, and medicated. No court on earth will believe a word you say."
Margaret’s face drained of every ounce of color. Her composed, aristocratic facade shattered instantly.
Vanessa lunged forward, shrieking, "Turn that off! That's a manipulated file! It's a deepfake!"

"Officer," Dr. Bennett called out, catching the attention of the two city patrolmen who had just walked into the bay. "I believe you have probable cause to arrest two counts of domestic abuse, unlawful imprisonment, and conspiracy."
The handcuffs clicked onto Margaret’s wrists first. As they hauled her past me, she locked her eyes onto mine, whispering a curse that chilled the air. "You think you've won, soldier? You have no idea what my son has already set into motion."
