Chapter 3 - THE WEB OF CORRUPTION

With Daniel broken and compliant under the weight of the undeniable evidence, we formed an uneasy alliance. If we were going to rescue Emily's full legal rights and protect baby Noah from Margaret’s legal team, we needed to uncover the financial backing keeping Margaret so untouchable.
Daniel unlocked his mother’s private home office safe using a biometric code he remembered from childhood. Inside, we found more than just family heirlooms; we found a Pandora’s box of corporate espionage, medical kickbacks, and forged documents.
"Look at this," Daniel whispered, pulling out a thick manila folder labeled The Sterling Trust.
I leaned over his shoulder, scanning the pages. Margaret wasn’t just a wealthy socialite; she was the primary shareholder of a network of private psychiatric clinics known for exploiting vulnerable patients, overriding medical power of attorney, and seizing estates through coerced declarations of mental incompetence.
Emily hadn't been targeted by accident. Her family owned a plot of valuable commercial real estate near the waterfront—land that Margaret had been trying to acquire for years through shell corporations. By legally incapacitating Emily and seizing custody of Noah, Margaret would gain complete control over the trust fund attached to that property.
"She orchestrated the whole thing from the moment Emily announced her pregnancy," Daniel muttered, his hands shaking as he dropped the papers. "She didn't want a daughter-in-law. She wanted an acquisition."
Suddenly, my phone rang. Caller ID showed an unknown, encrypted number.
I hit speakerphone and answered sharply. "Speak."
"Major Vance," a smooth, synthesized voice replied. "I'd advise you to drop the investigation into the Sterling Trust immediately. Your daughter is currently resting in the hospital, but hospitals are fragile places. Oxygen lines can malfunction. Monitors can lose power. It would be a tragedy if a grieving family suffered another sudden loss."
My blood ran cold. "If you or anyone else touches a single hair on my daughter's head or my grandson's head, I will hunt you down across every continent on this earth. Do you understand me?"
The line went dead with a click.

"That was Executor Vance—one of Mom's fixers," Daniel panicked, grabbing his head. "They own judges, local police precincts, and medical boards. We can't beat them in a standard courtroom!"
"Then we aren't fighting a standard legal battle," I said, sliding the manila folder into my tactical pack. "We are going to wage a siege. Get your car keys. We are moving Emily out of that public hospital before Margaret’s fixers make their move."
