Chapter 8 - The Queen of the Ruins


They lay on the cold concrete like broken dolls, soaked, shivering, and utterly defeated.
I stood above them, the heavy flash drive still clutched safely in my hand.
"The federal marshals will be here in twenty minutes," I said calmly, looking down at my mother, who was trembling so violently she could barely speak. "Dad’s assets are seized. Olivia’s boutique is liquidated. Your bank accounts are frozen. You are legally, financially, and socially annihilated."
Olivia looked up at me through wet, matted blonde hair, her voice a pathetic whimper. "What... what are we supposed to do?"
"Survive," I said softly, turning my back on them for the final time. "Just like I did."
I walked toward my car, opened the door, and slid into the warm leather seat. As the engine roared to life, I glanced in the rearview mirror one last time.
My parents and my twin sister were huddled together on the wet patio of the house they had lost, shivering in the desert night, watching my taillights fade into the distance.
They thought they were invincible. They thought blood was thicker than water, and that cruelty could always be excused by favoritism.

I shifted into drive, accelerated into the Phoenix night, and smiled. The nightmare was over. And my new life was just beginning.
