Chapter 2 - The Crimson CrestThe sterile white lights of the intensive care unit felt blinding against my tired eyes. The regular, mechanical beep of the heart monitor was the only sound anchoring me to reality as my father slept peacefully under heavy sedation, his chest bandaged from the successful preparatory procedures.

Dr. Adrian Vale stood tall beside the bedside, his hands tucked neatly into the pockets of his crisp white lab coat. His dark, piercing eyes were fixed squarely on my aunt Celeste, whose rigid posture and ashen face betrayed a level of terror I had never witnessed before.
Celeste’s knuckles were white as she clutched the handle of her leather briefcase, her lips trembling slightly.
“Dr... Dr. Vale,” Celeste stammered, forcing a stiff, unnatural smile that didn't reach her eyes. “I had no idea the chief of cardiac surgery personally made rounds in the general recovery wing. We are... deeply grateful for your hospital’s charitable grant.”
Adrian didn't return her smile. His expression remained a mask of cold, calculated steel.
“It wasn't a corporate grant, Mrs. Vance,” Adrian replied, his deep voice carrying an icy edge that chilled the room. “It was a personal transaction. And I rarely fund medical interventions for strangers unless the circumstances demand a very specific kind of attention.”
Celeste’s eyes darted toward me, flashing with sudden, venomous rage. “Maya, you irresponsible, reckless girl! How could you drag a prominent physician into our family’s private business? You have no idea what kind of danger you’ve brought upon this family!”

“The only danger in this room, Celeste, is the truth you’ve been burying for the past twenty-two years,” I shot back, standing up straight beside my father’s bed.
Before Celeste could lash out, Adrian stepped between us, his gaze locking onto the embossed leather folder clutched in my aunt's hand—specifically, the silver crest stamped on the corner.
