Chapter 10 - The Unexpected Twist and Final JusticeMy finger rested lightly on the trigger of my pistol. Ten feet away, David stood with his thumb resting over the red button of the detonator, his eyes wide with manic triumph.

"You lose, Colonel," David sneered, taking a slow step backward toward the shattered window that led to the hospital fire escape. "Your whole life you fought for a country that forgot you, and in the end, you couldn't even save your own daughter from—"
CLACK.
A sharp, metallic sound echoed from the dark corner of the room behind David.
David’s eyes widened in confusion as a shadow detached itself from the wall.
It wasn't a ghost.
It was Emily.
Her eyes were wide, clear, and fully conscious. The pale, sluggish expression of sedation was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, razor-sharp focus that she must have inherited directly from me.
She hadn't been as deeply paralyzed as they thought. Her medical training and sheer willpower had allowed her to metabolize the neurotoxin hours ago while she lay waiting in the trauma bay.
Before David could turn around, Emily lunged forward with explosive speed, driving her foot upward behind his knee in a textbook military defensive strike.
David’s leg buckled with a sharp crunch, and he screamed, his balance shattering instantly.
As he fell backward, his thumb convulsed on the remote control—but my sniper reflexes took over. Before the signal could transmit to the pump, I raised my pistol and fired a single, precise shot that blew the remote cleanly out of his hand, shattering it into plastic confetti against the floor.
David hit the ground hard, howling in agony as Emily stood over him, her face cold, calm, and utterly unforgiving.
"You lied to me too, David," Emily whispered, quoting the very words carved into her back.
Sirens wailed in the distance, drawing closer and closer as federal marshals and my security forces flooded the corridors outside, securing the hospital and rounding up Julian’s remaining operatives.
I lowered my weapon, walking over to the bed, and gently took my daughter’s hand.

She squeezed it back, her grip strong, warm, and alive.
The war was finally over. And this time, family had won.
