Chapter 3 - The Hidden VaultI froze, listening intently. Tap... tap... click.

It wasn't a rat or a settling building. It was a mechanical sequence. In my years running reconnaissance and counter-insurgency operations, I had dismantled enough enemy bunkers to recognize a hidden compartment when I heard one.
I holstered my weapon for a fraction of a second, running my gloved hands along the base of the custom cedar shelving. My fingers brushed against a recessed panel near the floorboards. Pressing a hidden pressure latch—engineered with the precision of a Swiss watch—the entire shelving unit slid back with a pneumatic hiss.
Inside was a small, climate-controlled safe room no larger than a walk-in closet, illuminated by a faint blue glow from a desktop monitor.
I stepped inside, and the breath caught in my throat.
The walls were covered not with financial spreadsheets or legal briefs, but with corkboards, high-resolution photographs, and complex surveillance maps.
At the center of the largest board was a photograph of me—taken just yesterday outside my home in Virginia. Red yarn connected my photo to pictures of Emily, Alan Mercer, and a dozen other high-ranking medical officials at St. Mary’s Hospital.
Written across my face in bold red marker were the words: THE TARGET.
"Impressed, Colonel?"
The voice echoed from behind me in the dark penthouse foyer.
I spun around instantly, my hand flying to my weapon, but before I could clear the holster, a heavy blow struck my wrist, sending my gun clattering across the marble floor.
I pivoted, throwing a vicious right hook that would have shattered the jaw of any trained insurgent, but my fist hit empty air. A sharp, searing pain exploded in the back of my neck as a high-voltage taser prongs embedded themselves into my flesh.

Electricity surged through my nervous system, overriding my muscles. My knees buckled, and as I crashed hard onto the polished floor, the last thing I saw before darkness swallowed me was a pair of polished Italian leather shoes stepping into my field of vision—and a familiar voice whispering softly above me:
"Welcome to the trap, old man. You really thought you were the smartest predator in the room."
