Chapter 3 - VOICEMAIL FROM THE GRAVEMy head was spinning. Sedatives. My own mother had slipped drugs into my wife’s food or drink while she was recovering from childbirth.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out my phone. My hands were shaking so violently I almost dropped it. I opened my call history and looked at the short, terrified phone call I had received from Emily on the third day of my business trip—the call my mother had abruptly ended.

Then I realized something: my phone had an automatic call-recording app installed for work purposes. Every incoming and outgoing call was recorded and saved to a cloud server.

I pulled out my wireless earbuds, jammed them into my ears, and opened the cloud storage app.

I found the file from yesterday afternoon. I pressed play.

Emily’s weak, trembling voice filled my ears: “Ryan... please come home... your mother... she put something in my tea... I can’t wake up... she took Noah away... she won’t let me feed him...”

Then, my mother’s voice rang out in the background, sharp and sinister, far away from the phone’s microphone: “Give me that phone, you ungrateful bitch! You’re going to sign the house over, or your baby starves!”

A wet crunch followed on the audio, followed by Emily’s stifled scream, and then my mother’s voice right up against the speaker, suddenly sweet and fake: “Nothing is wrong. New mothers get emotional.”

The line went dead.

I stood frozen in the hospital corridor, tears streaming down my face, rage burning like fire in my chest.

It was all there. Clear, unedited, damning proof of torture, extortion, and poison.

At that exact moment, the doors to the ICU swung open. Detective Vance walked out, his face pale and furious. Behind him, two additional police officers followed.

Vance looked straight at my mother and sister.

“Linda Mitchell. Megan Mitchell,” Vance declared, his voice ringing across the hallway. “You are under arrest for attempted murder, felony child endangerment, poison administration, and extortion.”

Linda gasped, backing away. “What?! This is a mistake! My daughter-in-law is lying! She’s mentally ill!”

“Mrs. Mitchell,” Vance said coldly, pulling out a pair of handcuffs. “Your daughter-in-law didn't just speak to me. She gave me the physical evidence. She managed to hide a cup containing the laced tea under the bed before she passed out. Our lab team just did a quick swab—it’s laced with heavy prescription tranquilizers.”

Linda’s eyes widened in horror. She turned to look at me, her mask completely slipping. The loving mother facade vanished, replaced by an ugly, venomous glare.

“You weak, pathetic idiot!” Linda screamed at me as officers grabbed her arms and pulled her hands behind her back. “I did this for you! That woman was taking control of your life! She refused to put my name on the property! I raised you! Everything you have belongs to ME!”

Megan began sobbing uncontrollably as an officer slapped cuffs on her wrists too. “Mom, you said we wouldn't get caught! You said the police would believe us!”

“Shut up, Megan!” Linda shrieked.

As the officers dragged both of them down the hall, Linda turned her head, screaming over her shoulder at me: “You think this is over, Ryan?! You have no idea what I put in motion! Check your bank accounts, you fool! Check your company! You’re ruined!”
