Chapter 5 - THE CONFRONTATION IN ICUI rushed into the ICU room, my heart breaking at the sight before me.

Emily lay in the hospital bed, surrounded by heart monitors and IV drips. Her face was deathly pale, and dark circles shadowed her eyes, but when her gaze met mine, a flicker of strength lit up inside her. Her bruised wrists were bandaged with soft gauze.
“Ryan...” she whispered, her voice barely a rasp.
I fell to my knees beside her bed, taking her hand gently, careful not to touch her injuries. Tears overflowed and spilled down my cheeks.
“Emily... I’m so sorry,” I sobbed. “I should never have left. I should have listened to you from the beginning. I trusted them... and I almost lost you both.”
Emily squeezed my hand with surprising strength for someone so weak. “Noah... is he...?”
“He’s alive,” I reassured her quickly, wiping my eyes. “The doctors stabilized him. He’s going to be okay, Em. I promise you.”
A shuddering breath escaped her lips, and she closed her eyes for a moment, letting out a silent prayer of relief.
“They were monsters, Ryan,” Emily whispered, her voice trembling with remembered terror. “The moment your car left the driveway... your mother’s entire demeanor changed. She took my phone. She told me I was useless. When I tried to take Noah to feed him, she shoved me... she grabbed my wrists and locked me in the nursery.”
“She drugged you,” I said, rage tightening my jaw.
“She brought me tea,” Emily continued, tears leaking from the corners of her eyes. “She said it was to help my lactation. But after I drank it, my head started spinning. I couldn't stand up. I heard Noah crying in the other room for hours... hours, Ryan... and I couldn't move my legs to get to him...”
I pressed my forehead against the edge of her bed, consumed by a mixture of deep guilt and pure hatred for the woman who gave birth to me.
“They tried to frame me, Emily,” I told her softly. “They made fake audio files. They transferred money from my company to make it look like I was a criminal.”
Emily’s eyes snapped open. “The laptop...” she gasped.
“What laptop?”

“The day before you came home... Megan brought a strange man into the house,” Emily said, struggling to speak clearly through her fatigue. “I was lying on the floor, pretending to be asleep... I heard him talking to your mother. He had a black briefcase with silver latches. He said... ‘The software will mirror his credentials and trigger the wire transfer automatically once he connects to the hotel Wi-Fi in St. Louis.’”
My eyes widened. It was a setup involving an outside third party. My mother didn't work alone. She had hired an IT hacker to orchestrate the cyber-theft!
