Chapter 4 - The Midnight ConfessionThe storm outside raged harder, shaking the reinforced glass of the library windows as thunder rattled the mansion.

Alexander stood frozen, the revelation hitting him like a physical blow. The woman he trusted, the quiet soul who brought him coffee through his darkest corporate battles, was the daughter of the man his family had destroyed.
"You infiltrated my home," Alexander said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "You spent nine years playing the loyal servant, waiting for the right moment to destroy me."
"At first, yes," Grace admitted, her voice breaking. "When I got the job through a forged agency profile, I wanted to find the hidden accounts. I wanted to see you lose everything the way my family did. I wanted to watch Mercer Global burn to the ground."
She took a step closer, ignoring the armed security guards standing near the door.
"And did you?" Alexander asked, stepping around the desk. He closed the distance between them until he was towering over her. His eyes were dark, searching her face for any trace of deceit. "Did you find what you wanted?"
"No," Grace whispered, looking directly into his eyes. "Because the night your father died—the night you sat in this exact kitchen crying in the dark—I realized you didn't know anything about what your father did. You were just a kid when they framed my dad. You were carrying the sins of a monster you never truly knew."
Madeline sneered from her chair. "Oh, spare me the romance! She’s playing you, Alexander! She’s a grifter! Look at the flash drive! The second part of that file doesn't just implicate my father—it implicates her!"
Alexander didn't take his eyes off Grace. "What is she talking about, Grace?"
Grace reached into her pocket with trembling fingers and pulled out a folded piece of heavy parchment—an original bank transfer slip dated two weeks before Eleanor Mercer’s death.
"When your mother realized someone was poisoning her," Grace said, her voice shaking, "she didn't trust the police. She transferred fifty million dollars into an offshore trust. And she named the sole beneficiary..."
Grace paused, holding out the paper.
"...as me."
Senator Prescott burst out laughing, a frantic, hysterical sound. "Don't you see, Alexander? Your mother didn't hire an accountant; she hired a mercenary! Grace blackmailed Eleanor into signing over half the estate, and when the old woman hesitated, Grace finished her off with the digitalis!"
"That's a lie!" Grace screamed, spinning toward the Senator. "Eleanor knew she was dying! She wanted to ensure her legacy wasn't stolen by your family's corporate takeover, so she protected the only person who helped her uncover the truth!"
Alexander looked down at the bank transfer slip. The signature at the bottom was unmistakable—his mother’s firm, elegant handwriting.
"Is this true, Grace?" Alexander asked quietly. "Did my mother leave you fifty million dollars?"
"Yes," Grace said softly. "And I never wanted a dime of it. I tried to refuse it. But she made me take it so I could protect myself when her enemies came looking for the files."
Suddenly, the overhead lights in the mansion flickered and died.

The emergency generators kicked in a second later, bathing the library in an eerie, dim amber glow. But it wasn't the loss of power that made Alexander’s blood run cold.
It was the laser dot that suddenly appeared dead-center on Grace’s chest.
