Chapter 4 - The Spotlight TurnsEthan walked toward the stage like a man walking to the electric chair.

Every step was heavy, his shoulders slightly hunched beneath his bespoke tuxedo jacket. He mounted the steps, adjusting his posture at the mahogany podium as the applause finally died down. The massive projection screens behind him flickered to life, glowing with the crisp blue logo of the Whitestone Medical Foundation.
"Thank you, thank you so much," Ethan began, his voice slightly raspy before he cleared his throat and recovered his trademark medical-lecture cadence. "Tonight, we celebrate innovation. We celebrate lives saved, futures secured, and partnerships forged in the crucible of modern science..."
From my spot standing near the edge of Table 4, I watched him.
Sophia sat beside me, her arms crossed tightly over her emerald-clad chest, her eyes darting between Ethan on stage and me standing like a sentinel beside her. She didn't dare say another word.
"For over a year," Ethan continued, warming up to his speech as the audience hung on his every word, "my colleagues and I have been developing a revolutionary framework for cardiovascular diagnostics, in conjunction with our esteemed partners at Apex Medical Tech..."
He flashed a brilliant, charming smile toward Table 4, locking eyes with Sophia for a fraction of a second.
Up in the back tech booth, I caught Leo’s eye.
Leo was standing by the master console, his finger hovering over the auxiliary trigger switch we had tested earlier. He looked at me, raising a single eyebrow in silent question.
I gave him one slow, deliberate nod.
On stage, Ethan reached the climax of his introduction. "And now, I’d like to draw your attention to the screens behind me, as we unveil the proprietary data and strategic roadmap for our upcoming clinical expansion..."
Ethan raised his hand, pressing the remote clicker to advance to the final slide.
Click.
The main projection screens flickered. The standard corporate medical charts vanished instantly.
Instead, the massive screens erupted into a crystal-clear, high-definition photo slideshow.
It wasn't a medical chart.
It was a sprawling, beautifully curated photo album of Ethan and Sophia.
There was Ethan kissing Sophia outside an upscale boutique hotel in downtown Austin. There was Sophia draped over Ethan’s lap in a private VIP lounge at a medical conference in Chicago. There was a glowing receipt from an expensive jewelry store in Dallas—the exact date of our fifteenth wedding anniversary—showing the purchase of a diamond tennis bracelet charged to our joint account, shipped directly to an apartment address registered under an LLC in Sophia’s name.
And right at the center of the screen, in bold, elegant typography designed in the exact aesthetic of Atelier Madison, appeared the bold headline:
DR. ETHAN CARTER: INNOVATING CARDIOLOGY, EMBARRASSING INTEGRITY.

A collective gasp swept through five hundred people in the ballroom.
The silence that followed was absolute, terrifying, and profound.
