Chapter 2 - The Anatomy of a Setup"Don't you dare!"

Dominic closed the distance between them in a fraction of a second. His hand shot out, not to shoot, but to grip Evelyn’s wrist with bone-crushing force. The surgical blade clattered against the hardwood floor, spinning away into the shadows beneath the rocking chair.

Evelyn gasped, finally yielding to the physical pain as Dominic wrenched her arm back, pinning her against the nursery wall.

"Get away from him!" Mara shrieked, rushing forward to snatch Noah from the crib. She cradled the blue-lipped infant against her chest, rocking him frantically. "Oh, my sweet boy! Your monster of an aunt tried to kill you! Don't worry, Mara's here. Mara will protect you."

Noah let out a weak, pathetic whimper, his tiny fingers twitching against Mara’s apron.

Dominic kept Evelyn pinned, his chest heaving against hers. Her silk dress was slightly rumpled, her breath coming in shallow gasps, but her eyes—those sharp, analytical eyes—refused to break contact with his.

"You had a knife to a baby's throat," Dominic hissed, his face inches from hers. "Explain to me why I shouldn't put a bullet through your shoulder right now."

"Because..." Evelyn whispered, her voice tight with strain against his grip, "...look at the baby's fingers, Dominic. Look at them."

Dominic hesitated. He glanced over his shoulder at Mara, who was backing away toward the door, murmuring soothing nonsense to the child.

"Mr. Vale," Mara said, her voice trembling with an exaggerated, theatrical fear. "Please take the boy downstairs. Let me call Dr. Hayes. She... she needs to be locked up. She’s dangerous. You saw what she did to her patients in Chicago. That’s why they threw her out of the hospital!"

Dominic’s jaw tightened. The Chicago scandal. It was the dark secret Evelyn’s father had buried deep before arranging this political marriage. Evelyn had blown the whistle on a corrupt hospital board that was falsifying organ transplant trials. The board had retaliated by destroying her medical license, painting her as an unstable, paranoid rogue doctor.

Dominic had believed the official report. At least, he had wanted to.

"Shut up, Mara," Evelyn said quietly, still pinned against the wall.

"Mr. Vale, she’s threatening me again!" Mara cried, turning toward the hallway. "I’m taking Noah to the safe room. Call your guards!"

"Stop right there, Mara," Dominic commanded.

Mara froze with her hand on the brass doorknob. Her back was turned to them. For a single, terrifying heartbeat, the posture of the frail, weeping nanny vanished. Her shoulders squared. The trembling in her hand ceased entirely.

"Dominic," Evelyn murmured, her voice urgent. "Check her apron pocket. The right-hand pocket."

Dominic didn't hesitate. Releasing Evelyn with one hand, he lunged forward, grabbing Mara by the shoulder and spinning her around.

Mara gasped, dropping a small, amber glass vial.

It hit the floor with a dull clink, rolling across the Persian rug. The label was scratched off, but the sharp, unmistakable scent of bitter almonds and wild hemlock immediately filled the air.

Mara stared down at the vial, her face draining of all color.

"What is this?" Dominic growled, his heart hammering against his ribs like a sledgehammer.

Mara’s eyes darted wildly around the room. The mask was gone. The weeping, devoted caretaker had evaporated, replaced by something cold, calculating, and cornered.

"I... I don't know," Mara stammered, her voice suddenly dropping its theatrical tremor, sounding sharper, colder. "It’s... it’s just massage oil. For his rash."

"It's Conium maculatum," Evelyn said, stepping away from the wall and adjusting her sleeve. She walked calmly toward the desk, picking up a small cotton pad she had left there earlier. "A paralytic neurotoxin. Administered in micro-doses through his laundry and his milk over the past three weeks. It mimics severe allergies, creating a slow systemic failure. If he had died, the autopsy would have blamed a sudden infant respiratory syndrome. Natural causes. Tragic, but convenient."

Dominic looked from the vial on the floor to Mara, and finally to Evelyn.

"Why?" Dominic asked, his voice dangerously low.

Mara didn't answer. Instead, a slow, chilling smile crept across her lips.

"Because," Mara whispered, her voice carrying a bizarre, chilling cadence, "the Vale bloodline needs to be cleansed. And you, Dominic... you were looking in all the wrong places for your enemies."

Before Dominic could lunge, Mara reached into her apron pocket, pulled out a heavy silver candlestick, and hurled it directly at the antique nursery window with explosive force.
