Chapter 2 - The Inner CircleThe heavy oak door of Nathan’s private study slammed shut behind us, muffling the sound of the storm brewing outside against the Connecticut glass walls.

Nathan poured two fingers of amber scotch into a crystal tumbler, his hand entirely steady, though the muscles in his jaw ticked rhythmically. He didn't drink it. He simply set it down on the glass-topped desk, right beside a leather-bound dossier containing Dr. Reeves' latest billing cycle: four hundred thousand dollars for the third quarter alone.

"Explain the mechanism," Nathan commanded, his voice dropping into a low, lethal register. "If what you're saying is true, how is it entering their system? Their food is prepared by a private chef who tastes every meal. Their water is sealed. Their rooms are locked from the inside."

"Which is why it's not in the food, and it's not in the water," I said, pulling a leather armchair slightly closer to the desk and sitting down without waiting for an invitation. It caught him off guard; most people trembled in this room. "It’s in the climate control system. Specifically, the independent HVAC zone covering the north wing. It turns on at 9:00 PM—right after storytime—and cycles for exactly four hours, pumping a micro-atomized oil carrier into the vents."

Nathan stared at me, his brilliant, ruthless mind calculating the variables in real time. "An independent zone. Only the north wing has that specific ductwork..." He trailed off, his eyes darkening as the realization hit him. "The architectural blueprints were only seen by three people when we remodeled the mansion four years ago. Me, my late wife's brother Marcus, and..."

"And your Chief of Security," I finished for him. "Or your personal physician."

Before Nathan could reach for the encrypted intercom on his desk, a sharp, frantic knock rattled the heavy oak door.

The door swung open before Nathan could grant permission. It was Elena, the head housekeeper, her face pale and her hands trembling as she clutched a silver serving tray.

"Mr. Coleman," she gasped, casting a terrified glance in my direction. "You... you need to come to the medical wing immediately. Dr. Reeves is down there. He’s... he’s packing his things, and he’s demanding an emergency discharge for Jacob and Jonah."

Nathan didn't blink. "Discharge them to where?"

"He claims he’s arranged a specialized facility in Zurich," Elena stammered, wringing her apron strings. "He said if you don't sign the transfer papers tonight, their organs will begin shutting down within forty-eight hours due to your 'gross negligence' in delaying their treatment."

A chilling silence settled over the study.

I looked at Nathan. The mafia king who controlled shipping lanes, financial institutions, and half the political machinery of the Northeast suddenly looked like a father pushed to the absolute edge of a cliff.

"He's not moving them to Zurich," I whispered, standing up. "He's moving them where nobody will ever ask questions about what's really in their blood."
