Chapter 8 - The Gala of the DamnedThe grand ballroom of the Hartford Grand Hotel glittered under twenty thousand crystal chandeliers, filled with the elite of the Northeast: politicians, corporate titans, federal judges, and high-society socialites sipping champagne while string quartets played softly in the background.

When the double oak doors swung open and Nathan Coleman walked in, the entire room went dead silent.
In the underworld, Nathan was a ghost story people whispered about behind closed doors. Seeing him stride across the marble floor in a bespoke black tuxedo was like watching a shark enter a children's swimming pool.
And walking right beside him on his arm, draped in a backless emerald-silk evening gown that commanded every eye in the room, was Emily Dawson.
A murmur swept through the crowd. Whispers of “Isn’t that his nanny?” and “Who brought her?” rippled past the champagne towers.
Standing near the VIP dais, surrounded by three federal marshals and a state senator, was Arthur Sterling—the Director of the Regional Healthcare Oversight Board, and the secret mastermind behind Dr. Malcolm Reeves' syndicate. Sterling’s face drained of color the second he saw Nathan stepping toward him.
"Nathan," Sterling forced a tight, diplomatic smile, extending a hand that was visibly shaking. "I didn't realize you attended charity galas. And... bringing household staff? How eccentric."
Nathan didn't take his hand. Instead, he stopped three feet away, his dark eyes locked onto Sterling with terrifying stillness.
"Arthur," Nathan said smoothly, his voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom. "I didn't come for the charity. I came to deliver a diagnostic report."
Sterling’s smile faltered. "I beg your pardon?"
"My sons had a mysterious illness for two years," Nathan continued, stepping closer. "Cost me three million dollars in medical fees. But my new nanny here... she’s exceptional at noticing things people overlook."
I stepped forward from Nathan’s side, opened a sleek leather portfolio, and pulled out three printed financial statements stamped with official offshore banking seals.
"Mr. Sterling," I said, my voice cutting through the cavernous hall like crystal glass. "You might recognize these accounts from the Cayman Islands. Specifically, the quarterly payout funneled from Apex Bio-Pharm to your campaign fund in exchange for federal suppression of pediatric toxicology reports."
The room erupted into sudden, chaotic chatter. Cameras flashed from the press balcony above.
Sterling’s face turned the color of ash. He turned to the federal marshals flanking him. "Arrest him! Arrest both of them for public defamation and harassment!"

The marshals hesitated, glancing nervously at Nathan, who simply unbuttoned his jacket to reveal the carved ivory handle of a custom firearm tucked into his belt, flanked by six of his own armed enforcers who had quietly blocked every exit of the ballroom.
"Go ahead," Nathan whispered, his voice dripping with lethal promise. "Try it."
