Chapter 2 - The Fortress of Glass and Lies

The wrought-iron gates of the Caldwell estate stood twelve feet high, topped with discreet infrared cameras and spike guards. Behind them sat an 18,000-square-foot mansion of concrete, glass, and dark timber—a brutalist masterpiece designed to impress architectural magazines and intimidate visitors.
At 1:26 p.m., the grey F-250 didn't slow down as it approached the call-box at the front gate.
Inside the security booth, a uniformed private guard stepped out, holding a hand up. "Sir, this is a private residence! You need to—"
Richard didn't negotiate. He rammed the heavy steel bumper of his truck straight into the electrical control box adjacent to the gate arm. Sparks erupted in a violent shower of blue and orange. The hydraulic gate mechanism screeched, lost pressure, and swung loosely inward.
Richard hit the gas, the truck roaring onto the winding paved drive lined with pristine weeping willows.
He parked the truck sideways across the front portico, blocking the grand double entry doors and any immediate escape route. As he stepped out onto the paved circle drive, two uniformed guards—employees of Vanguard Security, a private contractor Richard recognized all too well—came running around the west wing of the house, hands on their sidearms.
"Hold it right there!" the lead guard yelled. "You're trespassing on private property!"
Richard walked toward them, his pace steady, his hands visible but loose at his sides. His eyes were entirely void of emotion.
"Where is my daughter?" Richard asked.
"Sir, turn around and get back in your vehicle, or we will use force—"
Richard closed the eight-foot gap before the guard could finish the sentence. He seized the guard's wrist, twisting it inward while driving a sharp palm strike into the man's sternum. The guard gasped as his breath was violently expelled, dropping to his knees. Before the second guard could draw his taser, Richard stepped into his balance line, swept his lead leg, and drove him face-first into the manicured lawn, disarming his belt holster with a single fluid swipe.
He dropped the guard's weapon into the fountain beside the walkway.
"I asked a question," Richard said, stepping over the groaning guard. "Where is she?"
The lead guard, clutching his chest, panted through gritted teeth. "Inside... main study. Mr. Caldwell said... said not to let anyone in."
Richard didn't waste another second. He walked up the sweeping marble steps toward the massive oak front doors. They were locked from the inside with a heavy electromagnetic deadbolt.
Richard reached into his jacket, pulled out a compact thermite entry strip—a breaching tool left over from his last tour—slapped it over the electronic lock cylinder, and ignited the pull-tab.

A blinding flash of white heat burned through the heavy steel lock mechanism in under three seconds. Richard kicked the door. It burst open with a deafening bang, echoing through the cavernous, white-marble foyer.
"Ethan!" Richard's voice boomed through the mansion like a artillery shell. "Step out!"
