Chapter 6 - The Fall of the CEO

Ethan swung the heavy paperweight blindly through the dark, cutting through empty air.
Before his arm could complete the arc, a hand like a steel vise clamped down on his wrist, twisting it until the bone groaned under immense pressure. Ethan shrieked as the paperweight dropped, clattering harmlessly to the floor.
Snap.
A sharp, sickening pop resonated in the dark room as Ethan's wrist was dislocated.
"Aaargh! My hand! You broke my hand!" Ethan fell to his knees, weeping in agonizing shock.
Emergency backup strip lighting along the floor suddenly kicked on—powered by isolated battery cells that had survived the pulse—casting a harsh, blood-red glow across the destruction of the study.
Richard stood over Ethan, holding him by the collar of his expensive designer shirt, lifting the CEO completely off his feet with one hand.
"Six years," Richard said, looking into Ethan's terrified, tearing eyes. "Six years you made her feel small. You made her feel helpless. You told her nobody was coming to save her."
"Please..." Ethan sobbed, all of his arrogant bravado evaporating into pathetic desperation. "I have millions... I can transfer... I'll give you whatever you want! Money, property, stock options—just don't kill me! Please, Colonel!"
Richard looked at him with profound disgust. "You think money fixes this?"
Richard didn't strike him. Instead, he pulled a set of heavy, military-grade zip-cuffs from his belt and bound Ethan's arms behind his back tightly, pinning him against the heavy metal leg of the mahogany desk.
He walked past the groaning CEO, dropping to his knees beside Emily.
The coldness in Richard's eyes vanished instantly, replaced by a tenderness that brought tears streaming down his weathered cheeks. He carefully lifted Emily into his arms, pulling her small, bruised body against his chest.
"I've got you, baby," Richard whispered, his voice cracking. "I've got you. It's over."
Emily buried her face into her father's shoulder, sobbing uncontrollably. "Dad... I'm so sorry... I thought... I thought I could handle it... I thought I could protect you..."
"Shh," Richard stroked her hair softly. "You don't ever have to apologize for surviving. You're coming home."
Siren echoes began to faint across the valley, rising up toward the Belle Meade estate. Police cruisers were arriving—not summoned by Ethan's security system, but by the emergency distress beacon Richard had triggered from his truck five minutes before stepping onto the property.
Ethan looked up from the floor, blood dripping from his nose, a sinister grin trying to rebuild itself through his pain. "The police... they're here..." he wheezed. "You smashed my gates... you assaulted my staff... you broke into my home! You're going to prison, old man! You hear me?! You're going to prison!"

Richard turned slowly, looking down at Ethan with complete pity.
"You really don't get it, do you, Ethan?" Richard said.
