Chapter 4 - The Mask Comes Off

The study was a sprawling room filled with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the valley below. Expensive art lined the walls, but the floor was a scene of devastation.

Emily was curled in a corner near a massive mahogany desk. Her face was pale, her eye swollen shut, and a deep cut across her lip bled onto her torn spring dress. Her arm was pinned unnaturally against her side, clearly broken or dislocated.

Standing over her was Ethan Caldwell.

He didn't look like the charismatic CEO who graced magazine covers. His hair was disheveled, his tailor-made shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his knuckles scraped red. In his right hand, he held a sleek, heavy silver paperweight—heavy enough to fracture a skull.

"Get away from her," Richard whispered.

Ethan turned slowly, a twisted smirk forming on his face. He didn't look afraid. He looked exhilarated, consumed by the terrifying confidence of a man who believed his wealth made him invincible.

"Or what, Colonel?" Ethan sneered, taking a slow step toward Emily, threateningly raising the silver weight in his hand. "What are you going to do? Shoot me? Beat me up? Go ahead. Look around! I have 4K cameras recording every square inch of this room. You step foot toward me, and you're the aggressor. A crazy, PTSD-ridden veteran breaking into a billionaire's home. My lawyers will have you locked in a state penitentiary for the rest of your miserable life while Emily stays right here... where she belongs."

Emily looked up at her father through her one open, tear-filled eye. "Dad... please... run... he set a trap..."

Richard’s gaze shifted slightly to the corner of the room. On a wall monitor, several security feeds were live. But one screen wasn't showing camera angles. It was showing a digital countdown timer, accompanied by a file transfer progress bar that read: UPLOAD 89% COMPLETE - METRO PD INTERNAL AFFAIRS DIRECTORY.

Ethan laughed—a dry, chilling sound. "Did you really think this was just about a marriage dispute, Old Man? You think I invited Emily to call you by accident? I needed you here today, Richard."

Richard’s eyes narrowed. "What are you talking about?"

"I know who you really were before you retired," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a razor-thin venom. "You weren't just a logistics officer in Iraq. You were part of the 2011 investigative tribunal that buried the corruption files on Vanguard Global Security. The same company that backs my tech firm. You kept those files on a private server. And today, using Emily’s distress call, you brought your encrypted tactical drive right into my network zone."

Ethan pointed a small device at Richard’s jacket.

"The moment you breached my front gate, my localized receiver cloned every file in your possession," Ethan gloated. "I now have the decrypted clearance codes to wipe my company's fraud records clean—and lay the entire scandal squarely on your dead shoulders."
