Chapter 5 - The Hunt in the Slums

The rain began to fall in sheets, turning the dirt pathways of the hillside slum into rivers of thick, brown mud. Mateo and Doña Lucía huddled inside a half-collapsed, abandoned concrete shack.

Lucía was shivering, her expensive wool suit soaked and ruined. But her resolve had not broken.

"We cannot go to the foundry, Mateo," she whispered, her teeth chattering. "Alejandro will kill us all the moment he gets his hands on that ring. He has no honor. He has no mercy."

"Then what do I do?!" Mateo yelled, his eyes wide with desperate panic. "My children's lives are on the line! Diego, Sofía, Leo... they are everything I have! I don't care about your family's billions! I don't care about your husband's murder! I want my kids!"

"And you will get them," Lucía said, placing both her hands on his face, forcing him to look at her. "But we must play this smarter than him. Alejandro thinks he has the upper hand because he has the power of the state. But he made one fatal mistake."

She reached into her pocket. Instead of pulling out the ring, she pulled out a small, metallic object no larger than a coin.

"What is that?" Mateo asked.

"A tracking device," Lucía said. "My husband Carlos was paranoid. He knew Alejandro was monitoring his communications. When Carlos hid the hard drive in the washing machine, he also placed a secondary, backup drive with the exact same data in a safe deposit box at a private bank in San Pedro. This tracker... it contains the digital signature needed to bypass the bank's biometric security. Carlos set it up so that only I, or someone carrying this device, could access it."

She handed the device to Mateo.

"You must go to the bank, Mateo. Get the backup drive. The evidence on that drive is not just financial records. It contains a video confession from Alejandro's former hitman, detailing exactly how my husband was murdered, and listing every corrupt politician and police officer on Alejandro's payroll."

"And how does that save my kids?" Mateo asked, his voice shaking.

"Because the moment that data is uploaded to the internet, Alejandro's political shield will shatter. The federal government will have no choice but to arrest him immediately to save their own reputation. His police allies, including Commander Rivas, will abandon him to save themselves. The mercenaries guarding your children will flee the moment they realize their boss is going to a federal penitentiary."

Mateo looked at the small device in his palm. It felt incredibly heavy.

"But how do I get to the bank? The whole city is looking for us. Alejandro’s men, the state police... they'll spot me the moment I step onto the main road."

Suddenly, a shadow fell over the entrance of the shack.

Mateo scrambled back, shielding Lucía.

Standing in the doorway was a young man in a worn rain jacket. His face was covered in grease and soot.

"Diego?" Mateo gasped.

It wasn't his son Diego. But it was someone Mateo recognized. It was the young mechanic from the neighborhood flea market—the helper of the man who had sold Mateo the washing machine.

"Mateo," the young man said, his voice tense. "My name is Paco. My uncle sold you that machine. He's dead. Alejandro's men killed him last night because he sold it to you."

Mateo’s jaw dropped.

"I've been looking for you," Paco said, pulling a set of keys from his pocket. "I know how to get you into San Pedro without being seen. We use the old sewage and drainage tunnels that run from the slums directly under the wealthy districts. My uncle used to use them to smuggle scrap metal. But we have to go now. Rivas's men are already searching the bottom of the hill."

Mateo looked at Lucía, then at Paco. He had no choice. He had to trust the stranger.

"Let's go," Mateo said, his eyes hardening with a newfound, dangerous determination. "We're going to bring this empire down."
