Chapter 6 - The Unlocking of the Truth

The air inside the concrete storm drains under Monterrey was thick with the stench of stagnant water and industrial waste. Mateo, Doña Lucía, and Paco moved in near-total darkness, using only the dim light of Paco's smartphone.

Above them, they could hear the muffled rumble of traffic—the sound of the wealthy enclave of San Pedro Garza García.

"We are directly beneath the Banco Metropolitano," Paco whispered, stopping before a heavy, rusted iron grate that led upward into a subterranean maintenance room. "This grate leads to the building's utility basement. From there, you can access the private vault level."

Mateo looked at Doña Lucía. "Can you make it up there?"

Lucía nodded, her face pale but determined. "I will make it. For Carlos. And for your children."

With a combined effort, Mateo and Paco pried the rusted grate open. They scrambled up into the dry, air-conditioned basement of the bank.

Using Lucía’s intimate knowledge of the bank's layout—her husband had been one of its primary shareholders—they bypassed the main lobby and entered the private, secure vault elevator.

Within minutes, they stood before a massive, circular steel door. A security guard was stationed at a desk nearby.

The guard stood up, his hand hovering over his holster. "Excuse me, this area is closed to—"

"Stand down, officer," Lucía said, stepping forward with absolute authority. "I am Lucía Garza. You know exactly who I am."

The guard hesitated, recognizing the matriarch of the city's most powerful family. "Señora Garza... we were told you were... missing."

"I am right here. And I need access to vault box 409. Immediately."

The guard looked at the tracking device in Mateo's hand, then at the computer terminal. "Yes, ma'am. Please step inside."

The heavy steel door groaned as it swung open. They walked into the cold, silent vault room. Row upon row of brass safety deposit boxes lined the walls.

Lucía pointed to box 409. Mateo inserted the metallic tracking device into the digital interface next to the keyhole.

A soft beep echoed through the room. The lock clicked open.

Mateo pulled out a heavy metal drawer. Inside lay a sleek, silver external hard drive, wrapped in a document bearing the official seal of the Federal Prosecutor's Office.

"This is it," Lucía whispered, her eyes shining with tears. "This is the end of Alejandro's reign."

But before Mateo could touch the drive, the lights inside the vault flickered and died.

The heavy steel vault door began to slide shut with a low, hydraulic hiss.

"No!" Paco yelled, lunging toward the closing gap.

But it was too late. The door slammed shut with a deafening, metallic thud, locking them inside the airtight vault.

A speaker on the wall crackled to life.

"Did you really think it would be that easy, Mother?"

The voice was cold, mocking, and echoed off the steel walls. It was Senator Alejandro Garza.

"You always underestimated me," Alejandro said. "The moment you entered the bank's perimeter, my systems flagged your biometric signature. I don't need to chase you through the slums anymore. You've locked yourselves in my vault. And in exactly thirty minutes, the air filtration system will shut off."

"Alejandro, please!" Lucía cried toward the speaker. "Your own father's blood is on your hands! Don't do this!"

"My father was weak," Alejandro spat back. "He wanted to dismantle our family's legacy to appease his conscience. I will not let his sentimentality ruin my political future. And as for you, Mateo..."

A cold sweat broke out on Mateo's forehead.

"I have your children," Alejandro said. "They are currently in the back of a van, parked right outside the bank. If you want to see them take another breath... you will destroy that hard drive right now, in front of the security camera."

Mateo looked up at the small dome camera in the corner of the vault.

His hand trembled as he held the silver hard drive. If he destroyed it, he might save his children—but Alejandro would surely eliminate them all afterward to leave no witnesses. If he kept it, they would suffocate in this vault, and his children would be lost forever.

It was an impossible choice.

"You have ten seconds, Mateo," Alejandro's voice sneered. "Nine... eight..."

Mateo looked at the drive, then at Doña Lucía, who closed her eyes, preparing for the worst.

May you like

"Three... two..."

"Wait!" Mateo screamed.
