Chapter 3 - The Blood on the LedgerThe sun rose over the East River, painting the Manhattan skyline in bruised shades of violet and gold. Inside the penthouse, the silence was broken only by the rhythmic hum of the high-end espresso machine in the open-plan kitchen.

Emily sat at the marble island, her hands wrapped around a steaming mug. Across from her, Enzo Dante scrolled through a tablet screen, his face cast in the blue glow of incoming data packets. Lucas stood rigidly by the reinforced steel door, nursing a fresh cup of black coffee and eyeing Emily as if she were a live grenade with a loose pin.
"Your story checks out," Enzo said without looking up. He swiped a finger across the screen, bringing up a grainy, timestamped security feed from six years ago. "The Vane Shipping acquisition was a front for a private collection ring operating out of Eastern Europe. They swept up local strays, high-value breeds, anything they could get their hands on, and funneled them into underground fighting rings and private security syndicates. Cerberus—or Siri, as you insist on calling him—was one of their prize lots. He had the temperament, the pain tolerance, and the bloodline."
Emily’s chest tightened. She looked down at the dog, who was now resting his heavy chin on her knee, his eyes half-closed in deep contentment. "He was never meant for that. He was a sweet puppy. He used to sleep on my schoolbooks."
"People change, Miss Marcus. Animals adapt," Enzo said, finally laying the tablet down. He looked directly at her, his expression unreadable. "Which brings us to our current dilemma. You know where I live. You know the face of my primary security asset. More importantly, you've just witnessed a vulnerability in an animal that my enemies would pay millions to exploit."
The air in the kitchen dropped twenty degrees. Lucas stepped half an inch forward, his boots making a soft scrape against the stone.
Emily felt the blood drain from her face. "I don't care about your enemies, Mr. Dante. I don't care about your syndicate, your money, or your wars. I just want my dog back."
Enzo let out a short, dry laugh that held no warmth at all. "Your dog? Miss Marcus, let's establish a foundational reality. Cerberus cost me two hundred and fifty thousand Euros at an auction in Vienna, plus another fifty thousand in specialized tactical conditioning. Legally, contractually, and practically, he is mine."
"He was mine first!" Emily shot up from her stool, her chair scraping loudly against the floor. Siri scrambled up with her, letting out a low, protective rumble that instantly made Lucas's hand hover over his gun.
"Quiet, boy," Enzo commanded sharply, raising a single finger. The dog immediately silenced, though its amber eyes remained locked on Lucas with cold hostility. Enzo stood up, towering over Emily by nearly a head. He stepped closer, the scent of expensive cologne and ozone washing over her. "I admire your spirit. Truly. But sentimentality is a luxury you cannot afford, and neither can I."
He turned away, walking toward the floor-to-ceiling windows. "However... I have a proposition for you."
Emily clenched her fists at her sides. "I'm listening."
"My annual charity gala is in four days," Enzo said, his back to her. "It is a private, high-security event attended by every politician, magistrate, and underworld boss who holds an interest in the city's infrastructure. I need a catering crew with absolute discretion. People who blend into the woodwork. People who don't ask questions."

He turned back around, his dark eyes fixing on her with chilling precision. "You stay. You work the gala under my direct supervision. You and your furry friend can spend all the time you like in the private east wing after hours. And when the week is over... we will discuss whether Cerberus leaves with you, or stays with me."
Emily stared at him, her mind racing. It was a trap. It was a gilded cage designed to keep a potential leak contained under lock and key. But as she looked down at the dog leaning trustingly against her leg, she knew she didn't have a choice.
