Chapter 4 - Whispers in the GalleryThe east wing of the Dante penthouse was a labyrinth of private chambers, soundproofed meeting rooms, and a sprawling art gallery that housed millions of dollars in stolen or quietly acquired masterpieces. For the next three days, it became Emily’s temporary prison and sanctuary.

Maria, the older housekeeper, brought her meals and extra changes of clothes—simple, elegant black dresses suited for high-end domestic staff. But Maria also brought warnings whispered in broken English.

"Be careful, child," Maria murmured on the second evening, setting a tray of hot soup on the mahogany nightstand. "Mr. Dante is not a forgiving man. The men who come here—they are wolves in expensive suits. And Enzo... Enzo is the king of the pack. Do not test him."

"I'm not testing him, Maria," Emily sighed, gently stroking Siri’s head as the massive dog dozed beside her cot. "I'm just trying to survive long enough to take my dog home."

"Home?" Maria gave a sad, knowing smile. "Nobody leaves this house with what they came with, Miss Emily. Either they leave lighter, or they don't leave at all."

That night, unable to sleep, Emily slipped out of the guest quarters and wandered into the dimly lit art gallery. The moon poured through the massive glass skylights, casting long, skeletal shadows across marble statues and framed canvases by masters whose names she only recognized from art history textbooks.

She wasn't alone.

A low murmur of voices drifted from the far corner of the gallery, near a massive Renaissance oil painting of a burning city. Emily froze, pressing her back against the cool marble pillar.

"—the shipments from Antwerp are delayed," a rough, gravelly voice hissed. It wasn't Lucas. It sounded older, coarser—the voice of a man who smelled of cheap cigars and dockyards. "If the Dante syndicate can't secure the port terminals by Friday, the council is going to move against him. And when Enzo falls, all of us lose our cut."

"Let them try," a second voice replied smoothly. It was Enzo. Calm, unhurried, dripping with absolute lethal confidence. "The port terminals are secured, Viktor. And as for the council... remind them what happened the last time they questioned my logistics."

"You're playing a dangerous game, Enzo. Bringing outsiders into the penthouse. That catering girl—she’s a loose thread."

"Let her be a thread," Enzo’s voice drifted closer, cold and razor-sharp. "Threads can be woven into a tapestry, or they can be used to sew a shroud. I haven't decided which one she is yet."

Emily’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She held her breath, sliding further behind the heavy velvet drape of a floor-to-ceiling window.

Suddenly, a heavy weight pressed against her side.

She jumped, nearly gasping aloud, but a warm, wet nose nudged her hand. Siri. The dog had followed her out of the room, padding silently across the marble like a ghost. Before Emily could hush him, a low, inquiring rumble escaped the dog's throat.

In the shadows across the gallery, the conversation stopped dead.

"Who’s there?" Viktor's voice barked, followed by the heavy, metallic click of a firearm being unholstered.

Emily closed her eyes, bracing for the worst.
