Chapter 8 - A New HorizonThe doorbell rang precisely at 2:00 PM on a Saturday afternoon in late October.

I opened the door to find Officer Grant standing on the porch, wearing a civilian flannel shirt and jeans, holding a small cardboard box.
"Officer Grant," I said, raising an eyebrow with a smile. "To what do I owe the pleasure? Did another local criminal drop their ID in my driveway?"
He chuckled, stepping aside as Ellie burst out from behind him, holding a massive balloon shaped like a golden retriever and laughing hysterically.
"Dad—I mean, Officer Grant—helped me win the ring toss at the community fair!" Ellie announced, running straight into the living room to show off her prize to her stuffed animals.
Officer Grant—whose first name, as I had learned over the past few months of occasional, hesitant coffees and quiet conversations, was David—rubbed the back of his neck, a slight flush creeping up his collar.
"We ran into each other near the park," David explained, holding up a small pastry box. "I brought cinnamon rolls from that bakery downtown. The ones you mentioned liking a few weeks ago. Only if you're not busy, of course."
I looked past him at Ellie, who was already chattering happily to her stuffed bear about the fair, completely safe, completely loved, and surrounded by a life we had built together from the ashes of the old one.
