Chapter 8 - Whispers of the Past and Shadows on the HorizonThe engagement of Nathan Sterling and Maya Vance was the front-page headline across every major financial and social publication in the country. The scandal involving Victoria’s attempted hostile takeover and subsequent federal arrest dominated the news cycle for weeks, turning Maya into an overnight icon of grace, resilience, and unshakeable dignity.

Three months later, the Sterling estate hosted a private, high-society gala celebrating not only the upcoming wedding, but also the official launch of the Sterling-Vance Foundation—a charitable organization dedicated to supporting victims of corporate harassment, workplace gaslighting, and domestic psychological abuse.
In the grand ballroom, crystal chandeliers cascaded warm, golden light over hundreds of elite guests in designer tuxedos and glittering evening gowns. Maya stood near the dais, wearing a breathtaking emerald-green silk gown that commanded every eye in the room. She was speaking with a prominent philanthropist when a sudden chill ran down her spine.
Out of the corner of her eye, standing near the shadowed archway leading to the east wing corridor, stood a tall figure in a dark, hooded cloak.
Maya froze mid-sentence, her breath catching in her throat as the crowd around her blurred into a dizzying smear of light and sound. The figure raised a gloved hand, holding up a small, familiar object before slipping silently into the darkness of the corridor.
It was a replica gold bracelet.
Heart hammering against her ribs, Maya excused herself politely from her guest and hurried toward the archway, her heels clicking rapidly against the marble floor. "Hello? Who's there?" she called out, stepping into the dimly lit hallway.
The corridor was empty. Silence hung heavy in the air, broken only by the distant strains of classical music drifting from the ballroom.
Suddenly, a heavy oak service door at the end of the hall clicked shut. Maya rushed forward, throwing the door open to reveal the private cobblestone courtyard outside. Standing by the edge of the fountain was a lone figure wrapped in a dark coat, holding a burner phone to their ear.
As Maya stepped out into the cool night air, the figure turned around slowly.
It wasn't Victoria—Victoria was locked behind federal prison walls sixty miles away.

Instead, it was a woman with sharp, angular features and cold, calculating eyes that Maya had never seen before in her life. The stranger offered a slow, chilling smile, dropped the burner phone onto the stone pavement, and whispered four words that made Maya's blood run completely cold.
"The game has only just begun."
