Chapter 3 - THE CIPHER IN THE SANDInside the climate-controlled belly of the command chopper, the noise outside dropped to a dull roar as the heavy composite door sealed shut. Vance slid into the leather-trimmed seat opposite me, flicking open a ruggedized Panasonic Toughbook.

"You took a massive risk letting him hit you, Elena," Vance said without looking up, his fingers flying across the keyboard to link my challenge coin's internal data chip with the onboard military intranet.

"I didn't let him hit me," I replied, pressing an ice pack a medic had handed me against my swollen lip. "I calculated his temperament. Blackwood’s personnel file from Annapolis showed a history of violent outbursts against subordinates, but he always kept it behind closed doors where it could be buried. Doing it in front of two thousand Marines? That was pure, unadulterated arrogance. He handed us his head on a silver platter."

"True," Vance muttered, a faint, grim smile touching the corner of his mouth. "The Secretary is going to love the dash-cam footage from the base security drone. It’s already routed directly to her desk in the Pentagon."

The screen on the Toughbook flashed amber, then green. A cascading waterfall of code rolled down the display—encrypted satellite coordinates, encrypted bank transfers, and a list of names.

"What do we have on the San Diego cell?" I asked, leaning forward, the pain in my face fading into the background as the mission took over.

"We have a leak, El," Vance said, his face hardening. "It’s not just Blackwood. The data you pulled from the server farm in Damascus last month wasn't just a random cache. It was a ledger. And the name at the very top of the American payroll isn't an admiral. It’s someone much higher up."

Before Vance could click open the next encrypted file, the helicopter's internal comms headset buzzed to life with a high-priority squawk.

“Vance, this is Nomad Actual. We have an active emergency at the Pendleton sub-station perimeter. Satellite tracking indicates an external extraction team is moving in on Blackwood’s private quarters before our MPs can secure it. They’re trying to burn the hard drives!”

I looked at my brother. The game had just shifted from an internal disciplinary hearing to an active firefight.

"Pilot!" I yelled over the comms, grabbing my tactical vest from the floor and snapping it over my shoulders. "Vector hard left! Take us to Sector Four housing quarters—now!"

The helicopter lurched violently into the air, throwing us back against our seats as the twin turbines shrieked and pitched forward, chasing a cloud of dust across the California desert.
