Chapter 8 - THE OVAL OFFICE RECKONINGThe air inside the Oval Office felt thick enough to cut with a knife.

President Catherine Reynolds sat behind the historic Resolute Desk, her expression a mask of absolute fury. Standing before her was Arthur Sterling, his smug confidence entirely gone, replaced by a desperate, sweating veneer of panic. Vance and I stood near the door, flanked by Secret Service detail, while the encrypted flash drive sat plugged directly into the secure terminals on the President’s desk.
"Mr. Sterling," President Reynolds began, her voice dangerously quiet. "Care to explain why the Department of Defense cyber division just flagged a massive data transfer originating from your private corporate holdings to a known intelligence front in Beijing?"
Sterling swallowed hard, forcing a tight, nervous smile. "Madam President, it’s a setup. This... this woman—Commander Vance—has fabricated these files as part of a personal vendetta against military leadership. She assaulted a Rear Admiral in broad daylight at Camp Pendleton today! She is unstable—"
"She was assaulted by the Admiral, Arthur," the President interrupted, tapping a remote control on her desk.
The massive flat-screen television mounted on the wood-paneled wall flickered to life. Instantly, high-definition drone footage from the Camp Pendleton parade ground played in slow motion: Admiral Warren Blackwood striding across the concrete, screaming in my face, raising his hand, and violently striking me across the cheek. The crystal-clear audio captured every word of his arrogant tirade.
Then, the camera zoomed in on my face—the split lip, the single drop of blood hitting the concrete, and the exact moment I pulled out the Task Force Reaper challenge coin.
Sterling stared at the screen, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.
"That... that doesn't prove anything about the corporate data—" Sterling stammered.
"No, but the financial audit of Apex Global Logistics that Director Vance handed me twenty minutes ago does," the President said, standing up from her desk and walking slowly toward him. She dropped a thick stack of printed banking records onto the table in front of him. "Three million dollars deposited into your offshore accounts from a shell company registered in Hong Kong, matching the exact timestamps of every major naval troop movement we've conducted in the South China Sea over the past two years."
Sterling’s knees finally gave out. He stumbled back against the antique credenza, knocking over a crystal paperweight that shattered harmlessly on the Persian rug.
"You sold out our fleet, Arthur," President Reynolds said, her voice dropping to a whisper of pure contempt. "You traded the lives of American sailors for a retirement fund in a foreign bank."

"I was... I was securing geopolitical stability," Sterling whispered pathetically, his mask entirely shattered.
"You were committing treason," the President snapped. She turned her gaze from him to the two Secret Service agents standing by the door. "Take him out of my sight. Strip him of all clearances, seize every asset he owns, and lock him in a federal maximum-security holding cell before the sun comes up."
