CHAPTER 1 — The Test That Changed Everything

Alejandro Garza trusted contracts.

He trusted numbers.

He trusted signatures witnessed by lawyers.

But he no longer trusted people.

Three years earlier, he had lost the only two people who had ever made his enormous mansion feel like a home.

His wife.

His little daughter.

Since then...

Everyone who entered his life seemed to want something.

Money.

Power.

Inheritance.

Information.

Even kindness had started to look like another business transaction.

That was why the "tests" began.

No employee knew about them.

Not even his assistant.

Whenever a new housekeeper arrived, Alejandro would quietly create opportunities.

Sometimes he left expensive watches on the bathroom sink.

Sometimes envelopes filled with cash remained carelessly inside desk drawers.

Other times confidential merger documents were scattered across his office.

He watched everything through hidden security cameras.

One by one...

People failed.

One maid secretly photographed confidential contracts and sold them to a competitor.

Another stole jewelry she believed would never be noticed.

One even copied the passwords written inside Alejandro's private notebook.

Eleven housekeepers.

Eleven disappointments.

The mansion had become less like a home...

And more like a laboratory proving that trust no longer existed.

Until Citlali arrived.

She was twenty-six.

Quiet.

Always tying her dark hair into the same simple ponytail.

She wore no makeup.

No jewelry except a tiny silver cross hanging beneath her uniform.

Unlike the other employees, she never wandered through rooms she wasn't assigned to clean.

She never asked questions.

Never lingered near Alejandro's office.

And she always greeted every gardener, driver, and cook with exactly the same gentle smile.

The older staff immediately liked her.

Some even worried she was too kind to survive inside the Garza estate.

Because kindness rarely lasted long around broken people.

Especially around Alejandro.

Every morning before sunrise...

Citlali boarded three overcrowded buses from Valle de Chalco.

Her commute lasted nearly two hours each way.

By the time she arrived at the mansion in Las Lomas, her shoes were already dusty.

No one knew that every peso she earned had already been spent before payday.

Half paid for her grandmother Rosario's medications.

Another portion covered electricity and rent.

The rest...

Almost nothing remained.

Yet she never complained.

Not once.

Inside his office, Alejandro watched her through silent security monitors.

He noticed strange things.

Whenever she dusted the family photographs lining the hallway...

She always paused before the portrait of Elena and little Sofía.

Not out of curiosity.

Out of respect.

She gently straightened the silver frame each time before walking away.

When she watered the flowers in the garden...

She always left one fresh white lily beneath the stone angel that marked the family's private memorial.

No one had asked her to.

No one even noticed.

Except Alejandro.

He began watching more carefully.

Why would a woman who barely had enough money to eat...

Spend five pesos every morning buying a single fresh flower from a street vendor?

The question lingered in his mind.

Four weeks later...

He decided to perform the final test.

The most difficult one.

The test that had exposed everyone else.

At exactly four o'clock on Tuesday afternoon...

Alejandro swallowed two sleeping pills with half a glass of tequila.

The medication wouldn't make him unconscious.

Only unable to move.

His breathing slowed.

His muscles refused to respond.

But his hearing remained perfectly clear.

He deliberately scattered confidential contracts across the carpet.

His luxury wallet rested wide open.

More than one hundred thousand pesos sat inside.

Enough money to completely change an ordinary person's life.

Then...

He waited.

Minutes later...

Soft footsteps approached.

The office door opened.

Citlali stepped inside carrying fresh towels.

She immediately noticed him lying motionless.

The color drained from her face.

"Sir?"

No answer.

She hurried closer.

Her hands trembled as she checked his pulse.

It was steady.

She let out a quiet sigh of relief.

Instead of looking at the money...

She picked up every contract from the floor without reading a single line.

She carefully placed Alejandro's wallet back inside the desk drawer.

Then she noticed the air conditioner blowing directly toward him.

Without making a sound...

She lowered the temperature.

Walked across the room.

Retrieved a soft wool blanket.

And gently covered him.

Her movements reminded Alejandro of someone.

Someone he hadn't allowed himself to remember in years.

His wife.

Elena had always tucked blankets around him exactly the same way whenever he fell asleep reading financial reports.

For a brief second...

He forgot where he was.

Forgot why he had staged this cruel experiment.

Then Citlali whispered words that made time itself seem to stop.

"I don't know what pain you're hiding, Señor Garza..."

"But grief isn't something you defeat by carrying it alone."

She looked toward the family photograph sitting on the bookshelf.

"I think..."

"...the people we lose suffer more when we stop living than when they leave us."

Alejandro felt something tighten painfully inside his chest.

How could a stranger understand him better than the therapists he'd paid hundreds of thousands of pesos?

How could someone who cleaned floors speak with such heartbreaking certainty?

He wanted to open his eyes.

He wanted to ask her who she really was.

But the medication kept him frozen.

Citlali slowly stood.

Before leaving...

She quietly placed something beside his coffee cup.

A folded handwritten prayer.

No signature.

No name.

Just one sentence written in careful blue ink.

"Even broken hearts deserve another sunrise."

The office became silent again.

Alejandro's eyes remained closed...

But tears escaped anyway.

For the first time since Elena's funeral.

The silence lasted less than ten seconds.

Then—

BANG!

The office door slammed open so violently it struck the wall.

Alejandro's assistant, Mauricio, rushed inside with panic written across his face.

"Sir!"

Behind him stood two security guards.

And one furious woman wearing an expensive emerald-green designer suit.

Her diamond earrings sparkled as brightly as the hatred burning in her eyes.

She pointed directly at Citlali.

"That's her!"

"She's the granddaughter of Rosario Mendoza!"

Everyone in the room froze.

Citlali's face turned completely white.

Mauricio looked confused.

"What are you talking about?"

The elegant woman laughed coldly.

"Three years ago..."

"...her family destroyed Alejandro Garza's life."

The room fell deathly silent.

Citlali slowly shook her head.

"No..."

But before she could finish...

The woman pulled a yellowed newspaper clipping from her handbag and threw it across Alejandro's desk.

The headline screamed in giant black letters:

"Witness Vanishes After Fatal Lake Accident That Killed Billionaire's Wife and Daughter."

Below the headline...

Printed beside a grainy photograph...

Was the unmistakable face of Citlali's grandmother.

Doña Rosario.

The woman Alejandro believed had disappeared forever.

May you like

And the only surviving witness to the mysterious accident that had taken away his entire family.
