CHAPTER 5 — Elena's Final Will Changed Everything

Alejandro read the anonymous text again.

Then a third time.

His hands remained perfectly steady.

But inside...

His world was collapsing.

"Ask why your wife secretly changed her will three days before she died."

Impossible.

He had personally handled Elena's estate.

He had signed every legal document.

He had met with every attorney.

There had only been one will.

At least...

That was what he had been told.

Someone had lied.

At 7:30 the next morning, Alejandro walked into the headquarters of Garza & Asociados, the law firm that had represented his family for nearly thirty years.

The senior partner, Ricardo Fuentes, welcomed him with a nervous smile.

"Alejandro... this is unexpected."

"I have one question."

Ricardo nodded.

"Anything."

Alejandro placed his phone on the desk, displaying the anonymous message.

Ricardo read it.

The color drained from his face.

That reaction told Alejandro everything.

"You knew."

Ricardo remained silent.

"You knew there was another will."

Still no answer.

Alejandro leaned forward.

"For the last time..."

"Did Elena sign another will?"

After nearly a minute of silence...

Ricardo slowly opened a secure cabinet hidden behind a bookshelf.

From the back, he removed a sealed gray envelope.

Across the front, written in Elena's elegant handwriting, were seven words:

"Only Alejandro may open this personally."

Ricardo swallowed.

"She instructed me to give you this only if I believed your life was in danger."

"I never imagined..."

"...that day would finally come."

Alejandro broke the seal.

Inside were several documents.

The first was indeed a new will.

It transferred part of Elena's personal fortune—not to Alejandro—but into a confidential trust that would activate only if both she and Sofía died unexpectedly.

The trustee wasn't a banker.

It wasn't a lawyer.

It wasn't even a family member.

The trustee was...

Rosario Mendoza.

Alejandro stared at the page in disbelief.

Why would Elena entrust millions of pesos to Rosario?

Who exactly had Rosario been?

Then another folded letter slipped from the envelope.

It was addressed only to him.

His hands trembled as he unfolded it.

"My dearest Alejandro,

If you're reading this, then I was right to be afraid.

Please don't hate yourself anymore.

The accident was never your fault.

Someone close to us has been watching our family for months.

I noticed little things at first.

Phone calls with no voices.

Cars parked outside our house every night.

Important documents disappearing and mysteriously returning.

When I finally realized who might be involved...

I became terrified.

I couldn't tell you because I didn't know who you could still trust."

Alejandro stopped reading.

His breathing became uneven.

There was more.

Much more.

"Rosario knows the truth.

She promised to protect the evidence if anything happened to me.

If we both survive, burn this letter.

If we don't...

Find the blue metal box.

Whatever you do...

Never trust Eduardo Castaño.

And please remember this...

None of this was your fault.

I loved you until my last heartbeat.

— Elena."

A tear landed on the paper.

The first one Alejandro had allowed himself to shed in years.

Across the city...

Citlali sat alone inside her grandmother's tiny house.

The old family photograph lay on the table beside Rosario's letter.

She turned it over once again.

Something caught her eye.

The date.

July 14... twenty-five years earlier.

Tomorrow...

Would be exactly twenty-five years since the photograph had been taken.

Why had her grandmother hidden it until now?

She searched an old wooden cabinet filled with faded albums.

Behind the last photo album...

She found another envelope.

Inside was a hospital bracelet.

The name printed on it wasn't Rosario's.

It wasn't Citlali's.

It read:

"Baby Girl Garza."

Citlali froze.

There was no explanation.

No birth certificate.

Nothing.

Only the bracelet.

And one tiny gold baby bracelet engraved with the initials...

S.G.

At that same moment...

Rosario remained imprisoned inside Eduardo Castaño's estate.

Verónica entered carrying breakfast.

Rosario refused to touch it.

"You should eat."

"I'm not hungry."

Verónica sighed.

"You've always been stubborn."

Rosario looked directly into her eyes.

"You still don't understand."

Verónica frowned.

"Understand what?"

Rosario smiled sadly.

"You think Alejandro is searching for me."

"He isn't."

"He's searching for the truth."

"And once he starts..."

"...he never stops."

Back at Garza Tower...

Alejandro summoned Mauricio and his entire executive security team.

He placed Elena's letter on the conference table.

"No copies."

"No phones."

"No one leaves this room until I finish."

Everyone nodded.

Alejandro looked at each of them.

"For three years..."

"I believed I was mourning an accident."

He paused.

"I was wrong."

He slid the photograph of Eduardo Castaño across the table.

"This man murdered my family."

The room fell silent.

"But I won't make another move until I know every person helping him."

Mauricio hesitated.

"There may be one problem."

Alejandro looked up.

"What?"

Mauricio opened a laptop connected to the company's internal security network.

"Someone logged into your private archive at 3:12 this morning."

"Using executive-level authorization."

Alejandro frowned.

"Whose authorization?"

Mauricio slowly turned the screen around.

Alejandro's blood ran cold.

The access credentials belonged to...

Alejandro Garza himself.

But he had been at home asleep.

Someone wasn't just stealing evidence anymore.

Someone inside his own organization could now perfectly imitate his identity.

And if they could access every file under his name...

Then the real target had never been Rosario.

May you like

It had always been Alejandro himself.

End of Chapter 5...
