Chapter 2 - THE GILDED CAGE OF CASTELLANO

The Fortress by the SeaThe Castellano estate was not a home; it was a sprawling, neoclassical fortress carved into the jagged cliffs of a private island off the Florida keys. Surveillance cameras whirred silently from the palm trees, and heavily armed men in dark suits patrolled the perimeter with trained German Shepherds. When the helicopter landed on the private pad at 3:00 AM, Hazel was still clutching Leo to her chest. The baby had refused to be held by anyone else during the entire journey, crying the moment Hazel tried to hand him back to his father.

Dominic led the way through the grand, marble-floored foyer, his coat billowing behind him. An elderly housekeeper with a strict, unsmiling face stood waiting.

"This is Mrs. Gable," Dominic said without stopping. "She will show you to the nursery wing. You will sleep in the adjoining room. Your daughter has already been moved to the pediatric ward at Miami General, under my personal security detail. Her bills are paid in full. Do your job, Hazel, and your child lives like a princess. Fail me, and..." He didn't finish the sentence, but the cold glare he directed at her spoke volumes.

"I understand," Hazel whispered, her throat dry.

As Mrs. Gable led her down the labyrinthine corridors, Hazel couldn't help but feel the crushing weight of her new reality. The walls were lined with priceless Renaissance art, interspersed with high-tech biometric security scanners. It was a place where beauty and extreme violence coexisted in a delicate, terrifying balance.

The nursery was a massive, circular room bathed in soft blue light. A hand-carved crib sat in the center, looking more like a throne than a bed. But as Hazel laid Leo down, his tiny fingers clung to her shirt, his eyes flying open in instant panic.

"Shh, baby, I'm here," Hazel murmured, climbing into the oversized armchair beside the crib and pulling him back into her lap. Only then did the tension leave the boy's tiny body.

Mrs. Gable watched from the doorway, her hard eyes softening just a fraction. "He hasn't slept like that since the night the late Mrs. Castellano was killed," the old woman said softly. "The house has been a graveyard ever since."

"What happened to his mother?" Hazel asked, trying to sound casual.

Mrs. Gable stiffened instantly, the warmth vanishing from her face. "That is not your concern, girl. In this house, asking questions is a quick way to find yourself at the bottom of the ocean. Rest while you can. The master expects you downstairs at dawn."

The Ghost in the MirrorHazel spent the remaining hours of the night staring out the window at the dark Atlantic waves crashing against the rocks below. She pulled out her burner phone to check on Lily, but there was no signal—the estate was completely jammed. A sense of isolation washed over her, heavy and suffocating. She was entirely at the mercy of a man who ruled through fear.

At exactly 6:00 AM, a sharp knock rattled the door. A maid entered, placing a tailored, high-end designer outfit on the bed—a cream-colored silk blouse and tailored trousers that cost more than Hazel’s annual salary.

"Mr. Castellano expects you in the dining room for breakfast," the maid said before quickly exiting.

Hazel changed, feeling like an imposter in the expensive clothes. She carried a happily babbling Leo down the grand staircase. The dining room was massive, featuring a mahogany table that could easily seat fifty people. Dominic sat at the head, reading a tablet while sipping black coffee. A plate of untouched food sat before him.

As Hazel approached, Dominic looked up, his gaze sweeping over her new attire. For a split second, a look of profound, agonizing shock flashed across his face, replaced instantly by his usual mask of stone.

"Sit," he commanded, gesturing to the chair to his right.

Hazel sat down, placing Leo in the high chair that had been set up next to her. The baby immediately reached for Hazel’s hand, playing with her fingers.

"You look... acceptable," Dominic said, his voice strangely tight. "My son seems to approve. But do not confuse my generosity for weakness, Hazel. You are here for one purpose only: to keep my heir alive and thriving. My world is full of enemies who would love nothing more than to use that boy to break me."

"I don't care about your world, Mr. Castellano," Hazel said firmly, looking him in the eye. "I only care about my daughter, and ensuring this little boy feels safe. But if I am to stay here, I demand to speak with my daughter every day. I need to know she's safe."

Dominic leaned forward, his massive frame casting a shadow over her. "You do not demand anything from me, Ms. Morrison. You earn it."

The Unexpected EncounterBefore Hazel could reply, the heavy double doors of the dining room swung open. A man with sharp, rat-like features and an expensive, flashy suit walked in, flanked by two bodyguards. Hazel recognized him from the news—it was Marcus Vance, Dominic’s chief business rival and a notorious figure in the city’s underground shipping trade.

"Dominic, old friend!" Marcus said, his voice dripping with false sincerity. "I had to see it to believe it. The great Dominic Castellano, bringing a common catering maid into his inner sanctum? Word on the street is you’ve gone soft since Clara’s death."

Dominic didn't stand up. He slowly lowered his coffee cup, the ceramic clicking sharply against the saucer. "You enter my home uninvited, Marcus? You must have a strong desire to see what my gardens look like from six feet under."

Marcus laughed, but his eyes were calculating, darting between Dominic, the baby, and finally settling on Hazel. A sinister smile spread across his face as he noticed how tightly Leo was holding onto Hazel's hand.

"Ah, so this is the miracle worker," Marcus said, stepping closer to Hazel. "The one who tamed the wolf's pup. She’s quite beautiful, Dominic. A bit plain, but she has that... maternal charm. Tell me, sweetheart, how much is he paying you? Because whatever it is, I can double it."

Dominic stood up so fast his chair flipped backward, crashing onto the marble floor. In a flash of movement, he crossed the distance between them, his hand clamping around Marcus’s throat, slamming the rival boss against the long mahogany table. The plates rattled violently.

"If you look at her again, if you breathe in her direction, I will tear your empire down stone by stone," Dominic snarled, his voice vibrating with a terrifying, demonic rage. "She belongs to the Castellano estate. And what is mine remains mine until I decide otherwise."

Marcus choked, his face turning red, but he managed a twisted grin. "You... you really care about her, don't you? Or is it because she looks exactly like her?"

Hazel’s breath caught in her throat. Looks exactly like who?

Dominic released Marcus with a disgusted shove. "Get out. Before I forget the treaty we signed."

Marcus gasped for air, straightening his tie. He cast one final, lingering look at Hazel—a look filled with malice and a sudden, dangerous realization. "Enjoy your new toy, Dominic. But remember... toys break very easily in our line of work."

As Marcus and his men left, Hazel sat frozen, her mind racing. She looked at Dominic, who was standing with his back to her, his shoulders tense.

"What did he mean?" Hazel whispered, her voice trembling. "Who do I look like?"

Dominic turned around, his face completely devoid of emotion, but his eyes were burning with a dangerous, unstable fire. He walked over to her, grabbing her chin gently but firmly, forcing her to look up at him.

"You look like a woman who wants her daughter to keep receiving medical care," Dominic whispered harshly. "Ask that question again, and you’ll find out exactly how cruel this world can be."

He let go of her and walked out, leaving Hazel alone in the massive room with a babbly baby and a terrifying realization: she wasn't just a nanny. She was a pawn in a deadly game, and her face was a weapon she didn't know how to use.
